GROCERY DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Grocery Director to oversee the Grocery Departments across all company locations.

The Grocery Director will be responsible for the overall leadership, performance, operations, staffing, merchandising, product selection, inventory, ordering, vendor relationships, pricing, product presentation, and profitability of the Grocery Departments company-wide.

This is a high-level, hands-on leadership position requiring significant grocery management experience. The ideal candidate must be willing to work a demanding schedule, lead by example, travel between locations, develop department teams, and maintain consistently high standards across all stores.

The Grocery Director is expected to understand both the operational and financial sides of the grocery business and continuously identify opportunities to improve sales, margins, inventory management, customer experience, and department execution.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Minimum of 5 years of grocery or retail management experience is required.
• Significant experience in a grocery store, supermarket, specialty market, or related retail food environment.
• Strong knowledge of grocery merchandising, inventory management, ordering, receiving, product rotation, pricing, promotions, and shrink control.
• Proven ability to manage employees and lead a department or multiple departments.
• Experience working with grocery vendors, distributors, and sales representatives.
• Strong understanding of sales, margins, inventory levels, and department profitability.
• Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel between all company locations as needed.
• Must be available to work a minimum of 55 hours per week.
• Weekends and holidays are REQUIRED.
• Must be available to work a 5½-day work week.
• Must be flexible to respond to operational needs across multiple locations.
• Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding retail environment.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform physical duties associated with grocery operations.
• Must be comfortable working directly with department managers, store leadership, employees, vendors, and senior management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Company-Wide Grocery Department Leadership

• Oversee the Grocery Departments at all company locations.
• Establish and maintain consistent company-wide standards for product quality, freshness, cleanliness, organization, merchandising, presentation, and customer service.
• Regularly visit locations to inspect departments, identify opportunities, and ensure company standards are being followed.
• Work directly with Grocery Managers and store leadership to improve performance and accountability.
• Develop and implement procedures to improve efficiency, productivity, sales, and profitability.
• Ensure each location maintains a properly organized, well-stocked, clean, and customer-ready Grocery Department.
• Hold department leadership accountable for execution and results.
• Identify operational challenges and develop practical solutions.

Grocery Merchandising & Presentation

• Establish and maintain high standards for grocery merchandising throughout all locations.
• Ensure shelves, displays, endcaps, promotional areas, and specialty sections are properly stocked and presented.
• Ensure products are organized, faced, rotated, priced, and displayed according to company standards.
• Develop and maintain merchandising strategies that support sales and customer experience.
• Ensure promotional and seasonal merchandise is properly executed and displayed.
• Monitor product assortment and make recommendations based on customer demand, sales trends, and store needs.
• Maintain consistent shopping experience and presentation standards throughout the Grocery Departments.

Ordering & Inventory Management

• Oversee purchasing and ordering practices across all locations.
• Monitor inventory levels and minimize out-of-stocks, overstock, waste, and shrink.
• Ensure proper product rotation and inventory control procedures are followed.
• Review ordering practices with Grocery Managers and provide direction when adjustments are needed.
• Work with vendors and distributors to maintain appropriate product availability.
• Monitor slow-moving and excess inventory and develop plans to improve sell-through.
• Analyze sales and inventory information to improve purchasing decisions.
• Maintain an appropriate product mix based on customer demand, sales performance, seasonality, and store needs.
• Identify opportunities to improve inventory turns and reduce unnecessary carrying costs.

Vendor & Supplier Management

• Develop and maintain professional relationships with grocery vendors, distributors, and sales representatives.
• Work with vendors to negotiate pricing, promotions, deals, displays, and product opportunities when appropriate.
• Review vendor performance and address service, pricing, availability, or quality concerns.
• Identify new products and vendor opportunities that may benefit the company.
• Ensure vendor deliveries and product receiving practices support department standards.
• Monitor pricing and market conditions to help maintain competitive and profitable retail pricing.

Financial & Operational Performance

• Monitor department sales, margins, labor costs, inventory, shrink, waste, and overall profitability.
• Review Grocery Department performance across all locations.
• Identify opportunities to increase sales and improve gross margins.
• Establish accountability for department-level performance.
• Review performance with Grocery Managers and provide direction for improvement.
• Implement strategies to reduce shrink, waste, and unnecessary expenses without sacrificing quality or customer service.
• Monitor key performance indicators and use data to make informed operational decisions.
• Identify opportunities for improved productivity and labor efficiency.
• Work with Senior Management on company-wide grocery goals and initiatives.

Staffing & Team Development

• Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, and development of Grocery Department employees.
• Establish staffing expectations and ensure appropriate coverage at each location.
• Hold Grocery Managers and employees accountable for performance and company standards.
• Train and develop Grocery Managers and employees to create a strong pipeline of future department leaders.
• Establish consistent training expectations across all Grocery Departments.
• Address performance issues promptly and professionally.
• Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and a strong work ethic.
• Lead by example and maintain a hands-on presence within the departments.

Food Safety, Compliance & Safety

• Ensure all Grocery Departments follow applicable food safety, sanitation, health, and workplace safety requirements.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work environments.
• Ensure employees follow proper food-handling, storage, rotation, and temperature-control procedures where applicable.
• Ensure products are properly stored, rotated, dated, and handled.
• Address safety, sanitation, product-quality, or compliance concerns immediately.
• Maintain company standards regarding cleanliness and department organization.

SCHEDULE & AVAILABILITY

This position requires a minimum commitment of 55 hours per week and is structured around a 5½-day work week.

Weekends and holidays are mandatory. The Grocery Director must have the flexibility to work around the operational needs of all locations.

Because this position oversees the Grocery Departments across the entire company, the Grocery Director must be willing and able to commute between all locations as needed.

Reliable transportation is required.

This is NOT a Monday–Friday office position. Candidates must understand and be comfortable with the hands-on, operational nature and demanding schedule of the position before applying.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $110,000–$120,000 per year

Salary will be based on experience, qualifications, leadership ability, grocery industry knowledge, and overall fit for the position.

Quarterly Bonus Incentive: Eligible for consideration after completing 6 months of employment. Bonus eligibility and amount will be based on company performance, department performance, achievement of established goals, and overall individual performance.

The listed salary range does not include any applicable holiday bonus. Holiday bonus compensation, when applicable, is separate from the advertised salary and is not included in the salary range above.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is an experienced grocery leader who understands that success requires more than simply keeping shelves stocked.

This individual must be able to lead people, manage inventory, understand numbers, build vendor relationships, drive sales, protect margins, maintain exceptional merchandising standards, solve problems, develop teams, and hold multiple locations accountable to the same high standards.

We are looking for a hands-on leader who leads by example, takes ownership, communicates effectively, understands the grocery business, and is willing to do what is necessary to keep the Grocery Departments operating at the highest level.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the importance of product selection, presentation, freshness, availability, pricing, customer experience, and profitability.
