POSITION:               Natural Resource Technician I/II

SALARY:                   $20.34 - 24.03, per hour

REPORTS TO:        Wildlife Disease Biologist

LOCATION:               Nespelem, WA 

 

Basic Functions:      This is a Non-Exempt position. This position falls within the Natural Resources Technician series. The Wildlife Health
Technician works within the Wildlife Division in Nespelem, Washington and supports critical efforts in monitoring and managing wildlife disease for the lands under Tribal authority including the South Half, North Half, and Aboriginal Territories. This position assists in the detection, prevention, and mitigation of diseases affecting wildlife populations. * This is a term-position and currently funded for approximately 6 months (depending on salary determination). Unless additional funding is received, this position will not continue after the original funding depletes.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: 

  • Wildlife Health Technician I:
  • High School Diploma or GED and a satisfactory work history.
  • Wildlife Health Technician II:
  • High School Diploma or GED and 36 months progressively responsible experience equivalent to the Technician I or equivalent level, related to wildlife, agriculture, natural resource management or other closely related field. An Associate’s degree in Natural
    Resources Management, Wildlife Management, Agriculture, or other closely related field will substitute for related work experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance and maintain throughout employment. Driving record must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification card.
  • Requires background clearance (Tribal, State) and maintain clearance throughout employment.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires knowledge of general principles and procedures of biological data collection, wildlife management, food and habits of wildlife species, wildlife and habitat ecology, and livestock husbandry.
  • Requires the skill of attention to detail and experience using hand and power tools, and proper care and maintenance of tools.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skill to work productively and cooperatively with diverse teams, exercise patience when dealing with internal and external customers, and convey technical concepts.
  • Requires skill to support tasks may include maintaining and cleaning vehicles and trailers, cleaning the lab and related workspaces, and preparing diagnostic specimens and sampling supplies for packaging and shipping.
  • Requires the ability to understand complicated directions and be able to find locations in the field based on those directions.
  • Requires the ability to effectively read a map and use GPS tools in the field.
  • Requires the ability to work with sickly or dead animals that may be in differing levels of cleanliness and/or decay and successfully collect biological samples suitable to be sent in for disease (or other) testing.
  • Requires the ability to work with multiple types of wildlife including: big game species, bats, rodents, carnivores, birds/waterfowl, etc.
  • Requires the ability to be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision.
  • Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals, and objectives on time.
  • Requires the ability to effectively handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly, and accurately.
  • Requires the ability to use field equipment involved in the capture and handling of wildlife.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively to the general public, other co-workers and crew.
  • Requires the ability to safely operate and maintain project equipment such as 4-wheel drive vehicle, ATV, tractors, farm implements, chainsaw, and power equipment.
  • Requires the ability to safely operate trucks and trailers; backing up, loading, and unloading equipment off the trailers.
  • Requires the ability to follow applicable regulations and standards to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Requires the ability to remind others of safety practices to minimize the likelihood of accidents.
  • Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals and objectives on time.
  • Requires the ability to operate equipment, including hand and power tools and sampling gear, safely and effectively.
  • Requires the ability to effective handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly and accurately.
  • Requires the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment as a team member in a pleasant and efficient manner.
  • Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials.
  • Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone.
  • Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard at an acceptable rate that meets department
    deadlines and accuracy standards, operate microcomputer, and use other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
  • Requires the ability to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours). Requires the ability to work a variable schedule, including: long days, evenings, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
  • Requires the ability to travel for meetings, training and conference participation as necessary.
  • Requires the ability and willingness to accommodate a flexible schedule with changes on short-notice.
  • Requires the ability to repetitively lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 45 lbs. while hiking in steep terrain.
  • Requires travel away from duty station to conduct field work. and the ability to work and drive in
    adverse weather conditions and rough terrain, sometimes in remote locations in all kinds of weather.
  • Requires excellent physical condition and will be expected to pull, push, or lift heavy objects performing tasks on variable and slippery terrain in all weather conditions. This may require working alone in these situations.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

 

TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.

 

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance.  In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances.  If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
