Introduction

The Natural Resource Fire Technician I (FFT1) is a key leadership position within the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (CTSI) Fire Management Program. This role provides direction and oversight for wildfire hazard mitigation, prescribed fire, wildfire suppression, and emergency response operations across Tribal and non-Tribal jurisdictions. The incumbent is responsible for leading fire management personnel and resources in accordance with Tribal priorities, safety protocols, and National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards, while supporting the stewardship and protection of Tribal Natural Resources.

Natural Resources Fire Technician II- (FFT2) supports the Tribal Natural Resources Department in managing, preventing, and suppressing wildfires on Tribal lands. This role combines hands-on firefighting, field operations, and safety compliance with respect for Tribal culture and natural resources. The FFT2 works closely with the Natural Resources Fire Technician I to protect communities, ecosystems, and cultural sites while following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards and Tribal policies

Duties

Fire Program

  • Natural Resources Fire Tech I - Available for a variety of fire, forestry, and natural resource management duties. Expected to be prepared to engage and supervise work on and around engines, tenders, fire crews, dispatch, lookout, helicopters, dozers, and other fire control tools and equipment. Prepared to engage and supervise on planned and un-planned wildfire events, including protecting reservation, federal, state, public, and private lands
  • Natural Resources Fire Tech I - Serves as a lead wildland firefighter setting the example of basic fire management duties, practices, techniques, and terminology. Tasks include tracking daily weather and fire behavior trends, leading control line installation, use of pumps, hose lines, chainsaw operations, use of ignition devices, and off road vehicles. May work in and around fire suppression aircraft such as helicopters, lead planes, and air tankers. Will participate and/or lead daily physical fitness activities, and adhere to safety standards.
  • Natural Resources Fire Tech I - Serves in leadership position on burn crew to reduce fuel hazards, and restore fire adapted ecosystems for cultural utilization and native habitat restoration.
  • Ensure utilization of proper personal protective equipment to mitigate safety hazards.
  • Participates in fire and safety training, radio use, vehicle operation, and medical emergency scenarios. Performs and oversees daily crew and vehicle proficiency checks and drills. Engages in safety sessions and after action reviews.
  • Moves dirt, chops brush, and cut trees to construct fire-line using hand tools. Control fire spread, prepare holding lines, participate in back fire and burn out operations.
  • Other fire related duties may include fire prevention, patrol, detection, dispatch, camp crew, and prescribed fire
  • Follows Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians Natural Resources FY-Fire Mobilization Plan.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Forestry

  • Operate chainsaws for extensive periods of time in arduous work conditions
  • Buck and split firewood for the Elders woodcut program
  • Slash brush and hardwood trees using chainsaws.
  • Build fire trails using hand tools and chainsaws.
  • Clear roads of brush, debris and small landslides using chainsaws and hand tools.
  • Pre-commercial thin and prune conifer and hardwood trees using chainsaws or hand tools.
  • Carry out animal damage control measures, including boomer trapping, vexar tubing, bud capping
  • Perform stand exams and stocking surveys

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

Natural Resources Fire Technician I (TL119) High School Diploma or GED. FFT1 and/or ICT5 required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be CPR/First Aid certified or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Safe chainsaw operation in accordance with NWCG S-212 standards and Tribal safety policies, preferred. Single Resource Boss (SRB) required. Must have completed all NWCG training and qualifications related to the position.

Natural Resources Fire Technician II (TL118) High School Diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age. The incumbent must be CPR/First Aid certified or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Must complete a medical screening, and successfully pass the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Work Capacity Test within six months of hire. Must become a certified Fire fighter Type 2 (FFT2) and chainsaw operator (FAL3) within six months of hire.

Knowledge Of

  • Wildland firefighting, structural firefighting, forestry, emergency response, landscaping, operating power tools or heavy equipment, construction, wilderness EMT, or other specialty skills sets.
  • Natural Resource management, including forest health, fuels reduction, watershed protection, and habitat conservation.
  • Understanding of tribal land management practices and cultural resource protection when conducting fire suppression or fuels management operations.-Preferred
  • Knowledge of NWCG standards, ICS (Incident Command System), and interagency wildfire operations.

Experience In

  • Experience leading and supervising wildland fire crews as a Single Resource Boss, ensuring safety, accountability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Experience navigating rugged terrain and working in remote environments under physically demanding conditions.
  • Experience implementing suppression tactics, including line construction, mop-up, firing operations, and structure protection.
  • Experience maintaining operational readiness, including equipment inspections, crew briefings, and incident documentation.

Ability To

  • Ability to work and lead under mentally and physically challenging conditions while maintaining situational awareness, work rate, quality, and safety
  • Ability to lead a module or crew in high-risk fire environments while maintaining situational awareness and safety compliance
  • Ability to communicate effectively through the chain of command within ICS structure.
  • Ability to make sound tactical decisions under pressure while managing personnel and resources

Other

  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid within 60-days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon State driver's license, insurance and be eligible to drive a GSA vehicle.
