Fire Management
Department of Natural Resources
Hourly Wage: $18.23/Regular/Furlough
Primary Fire Dispatcher and First-Line Supervisor during fire seasons of two fire lookouts, relief lookout, and Assistant Fire Dispatcher. Duties include receiving fire reports, plot locations on maps, and verifies incident location. Also dispatches aviation, fire equipment, personnel, and supplies to help support prescribed fires and wildfires. Maintains contact by radio and telephone with lookouts and suppression forces. Prepares reports of all fire activity, maintains log of action. Consequence of error requires ability to perform all duties without instruction, and minimal supervision requiring decision making and exercise of judgement. Must act and dress in a professional manner.
Examples of Work Performed:
Receives fire reports, plots locations on maps, verifies locations, independently dispatches BIA, Tribal and Co-operators personnel, supplies, and equipment, including aircraft to suppress fires. Maintains radio and telephone contact with lookouts and suppression forces and keeps assigned Duty Officers, AFMO's, and FMO informed as to status of incidents.
Supervises or assists in the preparation of thorough reports and logs all activities of suppression action and/or fire critiques; supervises the maintaining of the dispatch log during emergency incidents.
Will assist and supervise the making of arrangements for firefighting crews such as transportation, meals, supplies. etc.
Will have the opportunity travel for off reservation fire training and assignments.
Will prepare and maintain required plans such as dispatch, Service Supply, Critical Incident Management, and expanded dispatch.
Will oversee lookout facilities and insure they are in working order for fire season.
Will set the schedule for fire lookouts and will help prepare travel for the days they are living in them.
During fire season will sit in on various inner agency operational calls, dispatcher calls, morning briefings, and IFPL calls.
Other related duties, as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the fundamentals of fire behavior.
Knowledge of fire plotting, transposing Latitude and Longitude to Township, Range and Section from a Global Positioning System reading.
Knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS).
Knowledge of supervisory techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of time keeping systems such as iSolved.
Knowledge of computers/language and terminology.
Knowledge of weather terminology, data, and the ability to decipher both.
Knowledge of Yakama Reservation geographical locations.
Ability to complete 209's, Fire reports, burn permits, green slips, crew time reports, and OF-288's.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently for long hours under pressure and adjust to all emergency incidents.
Ability to work closely with various agencies and organizations including BIA Northwest regional office, Rural Fire Districts, National Interagency Fire Coordination Center, Region 6, U.S. Forest Service, Washington state DNR and others.
Ability to read and comprehend written technique Fire Management, BIA and other agency fire plans, National Fire Danger Ratings System Handbook, and other related material.
Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently, (transmit information using 2-way radio and telephone).
Skill in the operation of all equipment associated with position, copier, 2-way radio, FAX, weather instruments, typewriters, computers, vehicles etc.
Proficient with RAWS, INFORM, IROC, AFF, WFDSS, WFMI Lighting, Medical Standards Program, etc.
Minimum Requirements:
Three years experience as a dispatcher.
Highly dependable and will work long hours in high pressure situations.
During fire season will be "On Call" or "Stand-by" status 24-hrs a day, 7 days a week.
Must have a High School diploma or GED.
Required to pass a pre-employment background check.
Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
Preferred Requirements:
Preferred Washington State Driver's license with a clear status.
Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
