Director of Technical Accounting
Location: Phoenix, Arizona | Hybrid
The Opportunity
A high-growth organization is seeking a Director of Technical Accounting to serve as a senior internal resource on complex accounting matters and help develop the company’s public-company financial reporting capabilities.
The organization has historically relied significantly on external accounting advisors for technical accounting support. This individual will bring greater technical expertise and institutional knowledge in-house, taking ownership of complex accounting matters while continuing to leverage outside specialists when appropriate.
The position offers substantial visibility and is particularly well suited for a technical accounting or financial reporting professional who wants the opportunity to build rather than simply inherit an established function.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary internal subject-matter expert for complex and emerging U.S. GAAP matters.
- Research new accounting standards and technical accounting issues and lead implementation efforts.
- Prepare and review technical accounting memoranda supporting significant accounting conclusions.
- Partner with external auditors and accounting advisors on complex accounting matters.
- Develop and maintain scalable accounting policies, procedures, and technical documentation.
- Support accounting for complex transactions, including acquisitions, leases, debt, equity-based compensation, and other significant matters.
- Partner closely with Controllership, Finance, Legal, Tax, and senior leadership.
- Help develop the organization’s SEC reporting and public-company financial reporting capabilities.
- Support preparation for future SEC filings and related disclosure requirements.
- Establish appropriate disclosure controls, reporting calendars, review processes, and supporting infrastructure.
- Play a leadership role in building the technical accounting and financial reporting function as the organization grows.
Candidate Profile
- Significant experience in technical accounting, financial reporting, and/or public-company audit.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and document complex accounting conclusions.
- Meaningful exposure to SEC reporting and public-company accounting requirements.
- Experience working with SEC registrants strongly preferred.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Big Four public accounting experience is highly desirable, although candidates from other public accounting firms or corporate environments with directly relevant experience will be considered.
- Candidates at the Senior Manager, Director, or comparable level are particularly relevant.
- Strong written communication skills, particularly in technical accounting documentation and memoranda.
- Ability to independently lead complex initiatives and interact effectively with senior executives, auditors, and outside advisors.
- Comfortable operating in an environment where processes and infrastructure are still being built.
Why This Role
This role offers the opportunity to become a key technical accounting leader within a growing organization, establish best practices, develop public-company reporting capabilities, and materially influence the evolution of the broader accounting function.
Salary : $180,000 - $210,000
