Director of Accounting Consultant
Engagement Type: Consulting / Interim

Reports To: Senior Finance Leadership (CFO / VP Finance)
Position Overview
The Director of Accounting Consultant will provide senior-level accounting leadership to support a complex, multi-entity healthcare nonprofit organization. This role is responsible for overseeing accounting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements, strengthening internal controls, and supporting financial reporting during a period of transition, growth, or transformation.
The ideal consultant brings deep nonprofit and healthcare accounting expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to quickly assess, stabilize, and enhance accounting processes in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Leadership & Oversight
- Lead and oversee all core accounting functions, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, payroll accounting, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Provide hands-on leadership to accounting managers and staff; mentor and upskill team members as needed.
- Evaluate existing accounting processes and implement improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
- Oversee consolidated financial reporting across multiple entities, programs, and locations.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, healthcare-related regulations, and internal policies.
- Support preparation of financial schedules and documentation for external audits, grant reporting, and regulatory filings.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Assess and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting.
- Identify accounting risks and recommend corrective actions or process enhancements.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure consistent application of accounting policies across departments and entities.
Audit & External Partner Support
- Serve as a primary accounting liaison for external auditors and advisors.
- Manage audit readiness, fieldwork coordination, and resolution of audit findings.
- Support implementation of auditor recommendations and best practices.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Serve as a subject matter expert for SAP S/4HANA, supporting accounting operations, reporting, and system integrity.
- Partner with IT and finance stakeholders on SAP S/4HANA enhancements, configurations, and issue resolution.
- Support SAP S/4HANA implementations, upgrades, or post-go-live stabilization, including data validation and process alignment.
- Improve documentation of accounting policies, procedures, and close processes within SAP.
Strategic & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with finance leadership, operations, compliance, grants, and program teams to align accounting with organizational objectives.
- Provide accounting guidance related to new programs, contracts, or organizational initiatives.
- Support leadership with ad hoc financial analysis and special projects as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA or equivalent professional certification strongly preferred.
- 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including senior leadership roles.
- Extensive experience in nonprofit accounting; healthcare or multi-entity environments highly preferred.
- Hands-on experience with SAP S/4HANA in a complex accounting environment (required).
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, nonprofit financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex accounting operations.
- Hands-on, consultative approach with the ability to operate both strategically and tactically.
Preferred
- Experience supporting organizations with multiple legal entities or international operations.
- Prior interim or consulting experience.
- Experience leading or supporting ERP implementations or post-implementation optimization (SAP S/4HANA strongly preferred).
- Experience supporting large audits and complex regulatory environments.

Pay: $65.00 - $72.00 per hour
