Description
The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing heavy construction equipment, vehicles, and tools used in solar, substation, and civil renewable energy projects. This role supports field productivity and safety by ensuring all mechanical assets are in optimal working condition. The ideal candidate is proactive, skilled in both preventative and corrective maintenance, and able to respond quickly to equipment issues in remote job site environments.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and diagnostics on a variety of construction equipment including telehandlers, skid steers, trucks, trailers, trenchers, pile drivers, and specialty tools.
Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Respond to field repair needs in a timely and efficient manner to minimize equipment downtime.
Maintain service logs, repair records, and parts usage documentation in alignment with company maintenance programs.
Conduct DOT inspections and support compliance with safety, environmental, and vehicle regulations.
Coordinate with Equipment Manager and procurement team on parts ordering and equipment mobilization.
Train field operators on basic equipment care and daily inspections (fueling, greasing, cleaning, etc.).
Assist with equipment loading, unloading, tagging, and deployment between project sites.
Perform welding, fabrication, or light body work when required.
Maintain organized field shop areas and safe working conditions at all times.
Requirements
Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electronic systems.
Familiarity with construction equipment brands such as CAT, John Deere, Vermeer, JLG, Kubota, etc.
Ability to read equipment manuals, schematics, and diagnostic software.
Strong understanding of safety protocols for lock-out/tag-out, hot work, and hazardous materials.
Capable of working independently in remote field environments under pressure.
Skilled in operating service trucks, forklifts, and basic power tools.
Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Technical school or vocational training preferred.
3+ years of experience as a mechanic in construction, heavy equipment, agriculture, or industrial maintenance.
CDL Class A or B preferred, or ability to obtain.
OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
Welding certification or experience is a plus.
Must pass MVR and drug screening per DOT/FMCSA and company policy.
Physical Requirements:
Occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, walking, and standing.
Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and other team members.
When navigating a job site, the ability to move around project sites, which may involve walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.
Travel:
Ability to travel up to 100% of the time.
