Superintendent

Position Summary

The Superintendent directs all on-site field operations for heavy highway and civil construction projects, ensuring work is executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in conformance with plans and specifications. This role serves as the primary field leader on large, complex projects, managing foremen, subcontractors, and crews, and coordinating closely with the Project Manager, engineering staff, and owner/agency representatives. Candidates must have a proven track record supervising projects of $50 million or more; experience on projects of $100 million or is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and supervise all field construction activities to meet project schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements.
• Develop and maintain the project's overall schedule, sequencing, and manpower/equipment plans in coordination with the Project Manager.
• Supervise and coordinate multiple foremen, crews, and subcontractors across concurrent work areas.
• Read and interpret contract plans, specifications, and geotechnical/survey data to guide field execution.
• Serve as the primary field point of contact with owner/agency inspectors, engineers, and third-party stakeholders.
• Lead project safety culture, including safety planning, jobsite audits, incident investigation, and enforcement of OSHA and company safety standards.
• Manage material, equipment, and subcontractor logistics to keep the project on schedule.
• Oversee quality control and coordinate testing, inspections, and non-conformance resolution with project engineering staff.
• Track and manage field production, daily reports, look-ahead schedules, and progress documentation.
• Identify and communicate schedule risks, changed conditions, and potential claims to the Project Manager in a timely manner.
• Mentor and develop foremen and field staff, building bench strength within the project team.
• Coordinate maintenance of traffic, public safety, and community relations on active public roadway projects.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of heavy highway/civil construction field experience, including at least 5 years as a Superintendent.
• Demonstrated experience serving as lead field Superintendent on at least one project valued at $50 million or more.
• Strong working knowledge of heavy civil means and methods, including earthwork, drainage, structures, and paving.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex plans, specifications, and schedules (CPM scheduling knowledge preferred).
• OSHA 30-Hour certification.
• Proven track record managing multiple crews, foremen, and subcontractors on large, multi-phase projects.
• Strong safety leadership skills and working knowledge of OSHA regulations for heavy civil construction.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with owners, engineers, and agency inspectors.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience serving as lead field Superintendent on one or more projects valued at $100 million or more.
• Prior experience on MDOT SHA, VDOT, or DDOT Design-Build, Bid-Build, or CMAR projects.
• Experience with major interchange, bridge replacement, or highway congestion-relief projects.
• Experience managing maintenance of traffic on active, high-volume public roadways.
• Proficiency with scheduling and project management software.
• OSHA Competent Person training for excavation/trenching.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk active jobsites, including uneven terrain, open excavations, and elevated work areas, for extended periods.
• Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access structures and equipment as needed for inspection and oversight.
• Ability to work outdoors in all seasonal weather conditions.
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 lbs (plans, equipment, materials).

Working Conditions

• Active jobsite environment with heavy equipment, open excavation, and live-traffic conditions in close proximity.
• Exposure to dust, noise, groundwater, and varying weather conditions.
• Requires early start times, extended hours, and regular night or weekend work to meet project schedules, including live-traffic and maintenance-of-traffic operations.
• Frequent travel between project sites throughout the DMV region as assigned.
