Concord Middle School is seeking a skilled and compassionate Special Education Teacher to provide specialized instruction and support to middle school students with a range of disabilities and learning needs. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for delivering individualized and small-group instruction, developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and helping students access grade-level curriculum across educational settings. This role includes academic planning, structured literacy instruction, progress monitoring, collaboration with general education teachers and related service providers, communication with families, and supervision of special education support staff. The ideal candidate will have strong instructional practices, expertise in evidence-based literacy instruction, and the ability to differentiate and scaffold academic content in response to individual student needs. Responsibilities: Provide direct specialized instruction aligned with Massachusetts curriculum frameworks, district expectations, and student IEPs. Plan and deliver individualized and small-group instruction in academic, executive functioning, and other identified areas. Provide explicit, systematic, multisensory literacy instruction using Orton-Gillingham methodology. Develop, write, and implement measurable IEP goals and objectives. Monitor student progress, maintain appropriate documentation, and provide timely progress reports. Use assessment results and student data to adjust instruction, interventions, accommodations, and supports. Differentiate and modify grade-level curriculum to ensure students can meaningfully access instruction. Collaborate with general education teachers to support students in inclusive classroom settings. Implement accommodations, modifications, behavior support plans, and individualized strategies outlined in student IEPs. Collaborate closely with related service providers, counselors, behavior specialists, administrators, classroom teachers, and families to ensure coordinated support across settings. Support students in a variety of educational settings based on their individual needs. Supervise special education assistants and support the consistent implementation of instructional strategies, accommodations, and student support plans. Maintain responsive communication with families and staff regarding student progress, needs, and supports. Participate in Team meetings and maintain compliance with all state and federal special education requirements, district procedures, and timelines. Qualifications Required Active and valid Massachusetts DESE Moderate Disabilities PreK–8 license SEI Endorsement Current Orton-Gillingham certification through a recognized training organization Preferred Experience at the middle school level Dual certification in Moderate Disabilities PreK–8 and a middle school content area, such as English, mathematics, science, or social studies Desired Skills and Attributes The ideal candidate will be: Strong in planning and delivering specialized instruction Highly skilled in structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham instruction Knowledgeable about a range of disabilities and their impact on learning Skilled at differentiating and scaffolding grade-level curriculum Able to establish clear, consistent, and supportive learning environments Organized and attentive to special education documentation and timelines Willingness to lead and support special education assistants with clarity and consistency Reflective, flexible, and collaborative Committed to inclusive practices and helping students develop the skills needed to become increasingly independent learners
