Overview

The Investment Strategy Associate Engineer supports Central Engineering in advancing asset management practices and enhancing operational efficiency, with a focus on minimizing customer costs. The role is responsible for supporting the Transmission Probabilistic Reliability Assessment (TPRA) model and collaborating with subject matter experts on analytical evaluations and related technical analyses. These efforts contribute to the development and execution of the long-term capital strategy and investment portfolio for Central Operations. Primary areas of focus include data analytics, probabilistic model development and programming, project portfolio optimization, engineering design evaluation, economic assessment, and the development of sound, business-driven investment justifications.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Support the management and maintenance of the Transmission Probabilistic Reliability Assessment (TPRA) model and associated risk analyses.
  • Identify and evaluate business needs to inform investment strategies supporting Central Operations objectives.
  • Contribute to risk-based recommendations for asset replacement, overhaul, and maintenance across transmission and substation systems.
  • Analyze diverse datasets to enhance planning methodologies and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Apply knowledge of bulk power system operations, including transmission and substation equipment, to inform technical analyses.
  • Perform data analytics, cost-benefit evaluations, and economic assessments to support infrastructure investment decisions.
  • Prepare clear, concise business cases for capital projects and programs within Central Operations.
  • Define engineering scope, review design plans, and support development of project concepts and cost estimates to evaluate alternatives.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and operations teams to identify equipment issues and capital investment needs.
  • Support development of 5-year and 10-year capital plans, including asset performance metrics and forecasting inputs.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and consultants to enhance probabilistic modeling capabilities and economic evaluations.
  • Support regulatory filings and rate case activities by providing analytical input, documentation, and related support.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Math, Computer Science or applicable areas and two (2) years of experience to include one (1) year of engineering work experience in the fields of electrical and computer engineering, computer programming, asset management, utility operations, economic analysis or risk modeling, or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering, Math, Computer Science or applicable areas and two (2) years of experience to include one (1) year of engineering work experience in the fields of electrical and computer engineering, computer programming, asset management, utility operations, economic analysis or risk modeling.

Relevant Work Experience

  • Exhibit strong analytical capabilities, including proficiency in statistical analysis, sound decision-making, and effective verbal and written communication, with the ability to develop and deliver presentations, required.

  • Maintain proficiency in relevant technical tools and programming languages, including C#, Python, MS Access/SQL and Microsoft Office applications, required.
  • Apply strong financial and analytical acumen, including experience in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting complex data sets, required.
  • Utilize advanced data analytics tools and programming languages such as Excel, Python, R, and SQL to support business analytics, preferred.
  • Leverage relevant technical experience with electric power systems, including substation and transmission infrastructure, energy storage systems, project management, and construction, preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver's License Required

Physical Demands

  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure

Additional Physical Demands

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Salary : $85,000 - $115,000
