Job Overview
The role of a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) within the Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) involves executing the Twelve Core Functions: screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, documentation, consultation with other professionals regarding client care, referrals to appropriate levels of substance use services, and relapse prevention.
Utilizing Evidence-Based Practices, the SAIOP CADC is responsible for group facilitation, individual counseling, and case management while fostering strong relationships within the community.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions per state service definitions and agency guidelines, using evidence-based, strength-based motivational approaches to support client progress.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Director and administrative staff as needed.
- Attend required trainings and meetings by Division of MH/DD/SAS, LME, and agency standards, ensuring licensure and certifications are up to date.
- Communicate with referral sources to gather additional information to enhance Person-Centered Plans.
- Play an integral role in the substance use services team by providing clinical guidance for treatment planning and implementation.
- Develop Person-Centered Plans based on the Comprehensive Clinical Assessment, involving other team members and natural supports as appropriate.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation for all treatment and case management activities.
- Provide case management services, including arranging, coordinating, and monitoring client services in alignment with state service definition requirements.
- Administer urine drug screens (UDS) and follow up on lab results as directed by clinical procedures.
- Recommend psychiatric referrals for clients and monitor medication compliance, side effects, and effectiveness, communicating this information to psychiatrists as needed.
- Attend staff meetings, case conferences, and individual/group supervision sessions.
- Meet productivity standards and ensure confidentiality of clinical information when dealing with internal and external parties.
- Stay informed about and respect client rights policies and procedures.
- Participate in staff training and development activities and maintain professional standards at all times.
- Follow the Code of Ethics and Conduct, and complete additional duties as assigned.
- Participate in agency outreach and fundraising events as requested.
- Assist with other agency programs when necessary.
- Exhibit sensitivity to the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the service population.
- Respond to all calls or texts within three hours during the workweek or the next business day for after-hours inquiries.
- Be flexible and available for consumers during non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certification: Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC), or a Substance Abuse Counselor Intern who has passed the IC&R CADC exam.
- To qualify for the IC&R C ADC exam, candidates must complete 300 hours of supervised work under a CCS or CSI, at a ratio of one hour of supervision per 10 hours of work.
- Experience: Experience working in mental health or substance abuse services, with a personal history of managing their own illness, is preferred.
- Experience: Experience working with individuals facing mental health and addiction challenges.

- Valid North Carolina driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
