What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pain Physician - Regenerative Medicine Fellowship position at Compass Pain and Wellness?
About the Fellowship
Compass Pain and Wellness is seeking a physician for an intensive clinical fellowship in Interventional Orthopedics and Regenerative Medicine at our Portland, Oregon practice.
You will work directly alongside one of the world's most experienced regenerative medicine physicians who created many of the clinical protocols in use today at the most prestigious orthobiologic practices and academic institutions.
This position is designed for any interventional physician who wants to develop advanced expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and spine conditions. This includes ultrasound guided nerve hydodissection and regenerative orthopedics including platelet rich plasma and autologous stem cells derived from bone marrow and adipose tissue.
These techniques have successfully replaced close to 86% of pain management procedures and recommended orthopedic surgeries, including some total joint replacements. We rarely use corticosteroids, or perform nerve ablations. When performed correctly, biologics are the most powerful tool in a clinician's toolbox, and are undoubtedly the future of medicine.
This is not an observational fellowship. The successful candidate will become an active member of our clinical team and progressively develop the diagnostic and procedural skills necessary to independently evaluate and treat complex musculoskeletal patients.
After a year of fellowship, you will be among the top .01% of advanced interventional pain/orthopedic practitioners in the world, and command a commensurate salary...with our company or another.
We are open to both salary and equity partners as we continue to grow our core clinical team with unparalleled clinical excellence across the country.
Clinical Training
The fellowship emphasizes one of the central principles of interventional orthopedics: accurate diagnosis and precise treatment of the entire functional unit.
Training will include evaluation and treatment of the spine, peripheral joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, fascia, and peripheral nerves.
Depending on the fellow's experience, scope of practice, credentialing, and demonstrated competency, training and clinical exposure may include:
- Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound
- Ultrasound-guided injections and procedures
- Fluoroscopically guided spine and joint procedures
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Platelet Lysate
- Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and autologous adipose procedures
- Bone marrow aspiration and other biologic preparation
- Tendon, ligament, facet, disc and other functional unit procedures
- Peripheral nerve hydrodissection
- Focused shockwave therapy and other adjunctive regenerative technologies
A major emphasis will be placed on developing proficiency with both diagnostic and procedural ultrasound and detailed understanding of anatomical structures and procedural technique.
Beyond the Procedure
We believe excellent interventional medicine begins long before a needle is placed.
The fellow will develop advanced skills in:
- Musculoskeletal and neurologic physical examination
- Interpretation of MRI, X-ray, electrodiagnostic, and other diagnostic studies
- Dynamic diagnostic ultrasound
- Identifying pain generators rather than simply treating symptoms
- Understanding biomechanics and joint instability
- Evaluating ligamentous, tendon, cartilage, nerve, and other soft-tissue pathology
- Developing comprehensive treatment plans
- Selecting appropriate biologic preparations for different clinical indications
- Understanding PRP composition and preparation techniques
- Patient selection and procedural contraindications
- Managing procedural complications
- Pre- and post-procedure patient management
- Integrating rehabilitation with regenerative and interventional treatment
The goal is to develop physicians who can determine what structure is actually generating the patient's symptoms, why it has failed, and which intervention offers the most appropriate path toward restoring function.
Multidisciplinary Medicine
Compass operates a multidisciplinary model in which physicians work alongside physical rehabilitation, behavioral health, and other clinical disciplines.
The fellow will learn to integrate procedural medicine with rehabilitation rather than viewing injections and procedures as isolated treatments.
Our patients include individuals with chronic musculoskeletal conditions, sports and orthopedic injuries, spine disorders, work-related injuries, and injuries following motor vehicle accidents.
Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Hold an MD or DO degree
- Have completed an accredited residency program
- Be eligible for an unrestricted Oregon medical license
- Be eligible for DEA registration
- Possess strong clinical and communication skills and be an empathetic patient advocate
- Have a genuine interest in musculoskeletal medicine and procedural care
- Be motivated to develop advanced ultrasound and fluoroscopic procedural skills
Physicians from several specialties may be appropriate candidates, including:
- Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
- Anesthesiology
- Pain Medicine
- Sports Medicine
- Family Medicine with significant musculoskeletal training
- Emergency Medicine
- Orthopedics
- Other relevant specialties with a strong musculoskeletal or procedural background
Prior experience with ultrasound-guided procedures, fluoroscopy, pain medicine, sports medicine, or regenerative medicine is preferred but not required.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, patient oriented, and interested in understanding anatomy at a level that goes beyond simply following standardized injection protocols that keep patients in chronic pain forever.
You should enjoy procedures, anatomy, imaging, and solving difficult diagnostic problems. You should also be comfortable working in a growing clinical environment where physicians collaborate closely with the rest of the treatment team.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who wants to learn.
This fellowship is intended to provide the volume, mentorship, clinical exposure, and hands-on experience necessary to rapidly develop advanced competency in interventional orthopedics and regenerative medicine.
