What are the responsibilities and job description for the Restoration Technician position at Compass Native Landscapes?
Are you looking to spend the summer outside in nature? Help create and protect Missouri’s “backyard national parks”! Planting native plants and killing invasive plants is the best way to restore our native ecosystems. Our mission is to use horticulture for good, creating beautiful systems that help wildlife and filter rainwater. Sure, it mostly involves pulling weeds, but we also see amazing things like 26 monarch caterpillars in one garden and 12 foot tall flames next to the Danforth Plant Science building.
Job duties: Weeding, mulching, pruning, raking, invasive species control, sowing seed, tree removal, prescribed burns, operating hand held machinery etc.
Starting wage: $18 /hr depending on experience.
Work week: M-F, around 40 hours per week, occasional opportunity for weekend work, overtime paid at time and a half after 40 hrs worked in a week. Will be paid biweekly via direct deposit.
Hours: Generally 7:30-4 in summer, 8:30-5 in fall/winter, flexible. Meet in Kirkwood or agreed upon location for carpool. A weekly schedule will be sent on Sunday afternoon. Please notify us ASAP of any known schedule changes or conflicts, a week in advance if possible.
Desired Dates: May 4-December 18, 2026. Potential for extension into the winter season if interested.
Requirements
Work is carried out in many types of weather conditions including hot, humid, cold. Candidate must be able to regularly carry 30 lbs (occasionally up to 70 lbs), stand, stoop, kneel, etc.
Degree in ecology, horticulture, botany, biology, or similar field (or currently enrolled) preferred.
Experience in horticulture preferred.
Experience with two cycle motors, commonly used equipment, trucks and trailers preferred.
License through Missouri Department of Agriculture to apply pesticides preferred (or ability to acquire this within six months)
No alcohol or drug use on the job. No smoking except in designated areas.
