The Drinking Water Operator position handles the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City Drinking Water Plant and Water Distribution System. Duties include daily inspection and maintenance of all Water Plant treatment processes and distribution system facilities, including pumping stations, reservoirs, treatment plant and equipment. In addition, the Worker is a part of the City staff that performs other utility duties as requested.

General Duties/Responsibilities:
The following duties are standard for this job. These are not construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

  • Operate and control electrical motors, pumps and valves to regulate flow of water. Add specified amounts of chemicals per departmental procedures into water and/or adjusts automatic devices.
  • Install piping, valves, pumps, motors, and other appurtenances in the water system.
  • Interact with the public in the investigation of leaks and resolution of customer complaints and service needs.
  • Collect water samples required for State and Federal compliance.
  • Maintain records of flow data, chemical usage, hours of operation, and submits reports to State and Federal agencies for compliance.
  • Calibrate and maintain water treatment plant and reservoir flow meters.
  • The Drinking Water Operator position is on a 24/7 rotating “on call” schedule.
  • Read utility meters and reports data.

Qualifications & Requirements:

*The City pays for licensing.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Obtain Idaho Class 1 Water Operator in Training Licenses (Treatment and Distribution) within 1 year.*
  • Must obtain a Class “B” CDL and Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.*
  • Previous experience or licensure in the water treatment industry a plus.
  • Backflow Tester Certification a plus.
  • Knowledge of hand tools, equipment operation, and appropriate safety procedures.
  • Have good interpersonal skills and have the ability to effectively communicate with the other City employees and the public.
  • Must reside within 15 minutes of the City of Weiser for on call responsibilities.
  • Ability to advance licensure to Idaho Drinking Water Treatment 3 and Distribution 2 within 6 years is ideal, but not required.*
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Position requires a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen.

Schedule:

  • Full-time Monday through Friday.
  • After regular working hours and weekend work is required.
  • Will be “On-call” and on a rotating basis which includes weekends and nights. Carries on-call phone as assigned and responds to system alarm conditions.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed at the Wastewater Plant and throughout the City of Weiser.
  • Essential Requirements:
  • Position requires seeing, hearing, use of hands and fingers, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
  • Must be able to communicate with others including talking, hearing, and listening and exchanging communication.
  • Required to lift up to 50 pounds often.
  • Environmental Factors: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Performance may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, snow, Icey conditions, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents. Exposure to unpleasant odors, dirty materials, and hazardous substances.
