Job Title: Veterinary Technician – Oncology

Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Veterinary Technician to join our
Oncology team. This role supports board-certified oncologists in delivering advanced
diagnostics, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and multimodal cancer treatment to
companion animals. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced specialty environment,
demonstrates advanced technical proficiency, provides exceptional client support during
complex and emotionally sensitive cases, and is committed to providing high-quality,
patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Clinical & Patient Care
- Assist oncologists with consultations, staging diagnostics, and treatment planning
- Safely prepare, calculate, and administer chemotherapy and biologic agents in accordance with OSHA and hospital safety standards
- Place and maintain IV catheters
- Perform advanced sample collection (venipuncture, cystocentesis, FNA)
- Monitor patients during and after chemotherapy infusions and sedation procedures
- Perform and assist with diagnostic imaging (radiographs, ultrasound support, CT coordination as needed)
- Recognize and respond to oncologic emergencies and adverse drug reactions
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records
Treatment & Safety Compliance
- Handle cytotoxic drugs within biological safety cabinets using appropriate PPE
- Maintain chemotherapy logs, controlled drug records, and hazardous drug handling documentation
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, state regulations, and hospital protocols
- Properly dispose of hazardous waste and contaminated materials
- Participate in hospital-wide safety audits and quality assurance initiatives
- Maintain and calibrate medical equipment used in oncology treatments
Client Communication & Case Coordination
- Provide detailed discharge instructions and client education regarding treatment protocols, side effects, medication administration, and at-home monitoring
- Offer empathetic support to clients navigating cancer diagnoses and palliative care decisions
- Coordinate with referring veterinarians to ensure continuity of care
- Provide compassionate support to clients navigating difficult diagnoses
- Facilitate scheduling of follow-up treatments, staging diagnostics, and ongoing care
Administrative & Team Collaboration
- Maintain inventory of oncology medications and supplies
- Collaborate with the veterinary team to ensure seamless patient care
- Participate in case discussions and continuing education
Qualifications
- Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, or RVT) required
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty, emergency, or high-volume hospital setting preferred
- Oncology experience strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of chemotherapy safety standards and hazardous drug protocols a plus
- Proficiency in IV catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, and advanced patient care
- Excellent communication and client service skills
- Ability to manage emotionally sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism
- Strong mathematical skills for chemotherapy dose calculations
Preferred Attributes
- VTS (Oncology, Internal Medicine, or ECC) or pursuit of specialty certification a plus
- Experience with electronic medical record systems in a referral setting
- Ability to triage and prioritize complex cases
- Commitment to continuing education and evidence-based medicine
