Mechanical Designer
Compa Industries is searching for qualified candidates for a Mechanical Designer position at Fermilab in Batavia, IL.
Salary: $45/hr - $55/hr
Location: Batavia, IL
Citizenship: US citizenship required
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 40 hours/week

Join Fermilab’s Accelerator Physics & Superconducting Technology Division (APS-TD) Design/Drafting Group and contribute to nationally significant accelerator and superconducting technology projects. In this role, you will support advanced scientific and engineering initiatives including PIP-II, LCLS-II, LCLS-II HE, Accelerator Support, LHC AUP, SRF, and SC Magnets. Your work will directly support the development of highly specialized mechanical systems and components critical to cutting-edge research and innovation.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepare mechanical designs and drawings utilizing NX1980 and Teamcenter.
- Correctly apply ASME Y14.5-M-1994 (or higher) GD&T standards.
- Develop advanced level 3D models and 2D drawings for APS-TD projects.
- Perform design tolerance and stack-up calculations.
- Create layout designs and detailed mechanical drawings.
- Work directly with engineering staff to research and analyze design solutions.
- Coordinate design development activities to meet project schedules and technical requirements.
- Specify and select design components and materials.
- Follow Fermilab Quality Assurance Manual (QAM), APS-TD, and Design/Drafting Procedures.
- Support projects within APS-TD including PIP-II, LCLS-II, LCLS-II HE, Accelerator Support, LHC AUP, SRF, and SC Magnets.
- Deliver work products that are reviewed, checked, and approved by Fermilab staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Designer.
- Demonstrated proficiency using NX1980 CAD software.
- Experience utilizing Teamcenter for design management.
- Ability to correctly apply ASME Y14.5-M-1994 (or higher) GD&T standards.
- Ability to work onsite in Batavia, IL.
- Ability to deliver high-quality work products in deadline-driven project environments.
- Ability to work under limited supervision.
- Strong collaboration skills with engineering and technical teams.
- Ability to sit for up to 8 hours per day and perform repetitive computer work.
Desired Skills
- Experience supporting complex accelerator, superconducting, or scientific research projects.
- Strong mechanical design and detailing capabilities.
- Experience performing tolerance and stack-up analyses.
- Familiarity with formal design and drafting procedures in highly regulated technical environments.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and coordination abilities.Familiarity with Fermilab’s QAM and Design/Drafting Procedures.
- Experience supporting national laboratory projects.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional mechanical design experience.
- Must successfully demonstrate acceptable proficiency in NX1980 CAD through a Zoom interview.
