Applicants must meet all requirements below or will not be considered:
- Current standing as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Engineering, Science, or a related field
- 10 years of related experience as a Radiological Engineer, Radiological Control Engineer, Health Physicist, or equivalent
- Strong working knowledge of radiation protection requirements, radiological work controls, and ALARA principles

- The Certified Health Physicist plays a critical role in supporting safe and compliant radiological operations at WIPP. This position serves as a technical subject matter expert for the Radiological Controls organization, helping ensure radiological work is performed in accordance with approved procedures, regulatory requirements, and ALARA principles.
- You will directly support the continued effectiveness and improvement of the WIPP Radiation Protection Program while providing technical guidance across radiological work planning, waste shipment, dosimetry, instrumentation, radioactive material release, count room activities, and program assessments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide technical health physics support to the WIPP Radiological Controls department as a subject matter expert
- Ensure radiological support for WIPP operations is conducted in accordance with approved procedures, ALARA principles, and 10 CFR 835 requirements
- Assist with implementation and continuous improvement of the WIPP radiological control program
- Support radiological work controls for operational activities, including review and technical input for safe work execution
- Provide technical support related to waste characterization and shipment activities
- Support dosimetry, instrumentation, radioactive material release, count room operations, and assigned program assessments
- Evaluate radiological control practices and identify opportunities to improve safety, compliance, and operational performance
- Interface with Radiological Controls personnel, operations teams, and project stakeholders to resolve technical issues
- Interpret and apply radiation protection procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work planning aligns with ALARA and Radiation Protection Program objectives
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Engineering, Science, or a related field
- Minimum of ten (10) years of related experience as a Radiological Engineer, Radiological Control Engineer, Health Physicist, or equivalent
- Current standing as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
- Strong knowledge of radiological control principles, radiation protection program requirements, and ALARA implementation
- Working knowledge of 10 CFR 835
- Experience supporting radiological work planning, field execution, or operational health physics activities
- Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a regulated operational environment
Preferred Background:
- Previous WIPP Project experience
- DOE, nuclear, radiological operations, or waste management experience
- Experience with waste characterization and shipment
- Experience with dosimetry, instrumentation, count room operations, or radioactive material release
- Experience supporting radiation protection program assessments, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives
