Residential TrainerPosition Summary

The Residential Trainer is responsible for the training, care, supervision, and support of individuals served by the Agency. This position provides direct daily care, ensures individual safety, maintains required documentation, and performs other duties related to each individual's needs and program plan.


Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesIndividual Care and Supervision
  1. Provide direct supervision of assigned individuals, ensuring their safety and maintaining awareness of their history, status, and location at all times.
  2. Provide training, supervision, and direct care in areas including:
    • Personal hygiene
    • Self-care
    • Eating
    • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
  3. Perform Range of Motion (ROM) and positioning activities as directed by the Physical Therapist.
  4. Work cooperatively with clinical staff and specialists, including:
    • Occupational Therapists
    • Physical Therapists
    • Recreation Therapists
    • Speech Therapists
    • Behavior Specialists
    • Other treatment professionals
  5. Perform lifts and transfers as required by the individuals' physical needs.
  6. Monitor, document, and record services provided to individuals and report deficiencies or concerns regarding their care.
  7. Protect individual rights by immediately intervening and reporting any suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, or mistreatment to a supervisor or other designated authority.
  8. Maintain confidentiality of all individuals, employees, and Agency information, including medical, personnel, financial, and other sensitive records.

Medical and Health-Related Responsibilities
  1. Participate in recreational, community integration, and craft activities with individuals.
  2. Attend medical appointments as assigned and ensure all medical documentation is properly obtained and entered into the appropriate records. Provide medication administration, routine health care, and first aid as authorized and trained.
  3. Conduct and participate in fire drills and evacuation drills in accordance with DDS regulations and Agency policies.

Transportation Responsibilities
  1. Transport individuals to and from:
  • Day programs
  • Recreational activities
  • Church services
  • Family visits
  • Medical appointments
  • Other approved destinations

While transporting individuals, employees must comply with all motor vehicle laws and ensure Agency vehicles remain clean, safe, and in good working order. Vehicle concerns must be reported promptly to a supervisor.


Safety and Compliance
  1. Adhere to all OSHA requirements and Agency safety policies, including:
  • Universal Precautions
  • Body Substance Isolation procedures
  • Hazard Communication standards
  • Hazardous Materials protocols
  • Other applicable workplace safety requirements
  1. Assist with staffing coverage during employee vacations, illnesses, leaves of absence, emergencies, and other operational needs.
  2. Report all illnesses, accidents, injuries, incidents, and unusual occurrences to the appropriate supervisor and/or supervising RN as required.
  3. Maintain professional conduct at all times by working cooperatively with:
  • Individuals served
  • Co-workers
  • Supervisory staff
  • Day program personnel
  • Visitors
  • Other service providers

Training and Meetings
  1. Successfully attain and maintain all required certifications, in-service trainings, and mandatory educational requirements, including but not limited to:
  • CPR
  • First Aid
  • Medication Administration Certification
  • DDS-required training
  • Agency-required training
  • Individual-specific and program-specific training
  1. Attend and actively participate in:
  • Staff meetings
  • In-service trainings
  • Individual review meetings
  • Other required meetings

All staff, including relief employees, must attend at least one staff meeting per quarter. Additional meetings may be required based on program or individual needs.


Housekeeping and Facility Maintenance
  1. Maintain a safe, sanitary, and clean environment at all times. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Facility Cleaning

  • Vacuum carpets and rugs
  • Sweep and mop hard-surface flooring
  • Clean program equipment
  • Remove trash at the end of each shift

Kitchen Cleaning

  • Clean stoves, counters, sinks, appliances, cabinets, and refrigerators

Bathroom Cleaning

  • Clean toilets, sinks, mirrors, showers, tubs, walls, floors, and lighting fixtures

General Maintenance

  • Complete laundry duties as assigned
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and exits when necessary
  • Perform general housekeeping throughout the facility
  • Report all maintenance and safety concerns promptly to a supervisor

Other Duties
  1. Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Residence Director, Program Manager, Supervisor, or other authorized management personnel.

Job Specifications
  1. This position applies to:

    • Full-Time employees
    • Part-Time employees
    • Relief employees
    • Emergency Direct Care Staff
    • All shifts, including overnight positions
    • Employees assigned to overnight shifts may have additional duties and are required to remain awake and alert throughout their entire shift.
  2. Compensation is determined through annual operational budget reviews and DDS-approved funding and rate adjustments.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Connecticut Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to maintain records and documentation.
  • Ability to implement assigned programs and support plans.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including participation in two-person lifts and transfers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing direct care to individuals with developmental disabilities or other disabilities.
  • Education in Human Services or a related field.
