Are you someone who enjoys working outdoors, taking on a variety of tasks, and interacting with the public in a beautiful setting? The Division of Aeronautics maintains 32 backcountry airports across Idaho—six of which are managed by on-site Maintenance Craftsmen Sr. ("Caretakers"). We’re currently looking for a dedicated and self-motivated individual to serve as Airport Caretaker at Garden Valley Airport, one of our highly active recreational airstrips located 54 miles north of Boise.
Position Overview
As a caretaker, you’ll represent the State of Idaho and serve as the face of the airport to hundreds of visitors each season. This is a hands-on role that involves a wide range of responsibilities—from campground maintenance and light vehicle servicing to assisting with fly-in events and maintaining a welcoming environment for pilots and guests.
While you will be expected to engage with the public in a professional and friendly manner, you will not be required or permitted to provide technical aviation assistance, such as aircraft maintenance, hand-propping, or weather advisories.

Key Responsibilities
- Clean restrooms, shower facilities, and campgrounds daily or as needed
- Perform light repairs to buildings, fixtures, and fences
- Manage rental of courtesy cars, including paperwork and tracking of donations
- Maintain and service vehicles and equipment
- Landscape care: irrigate and mow runway and surrounding grounds weekly
- Troubleshoot and repair irrigation systems (sprinklers, lines, and pumps)
- Maintain a stocked supply of firewood (supplemented as needed using chainsaw/log splitter)
- Act as a host to greet pilots, assist visitors, and support fly-in event logistics
- Promote a positive image of the airport and ensure guest satisfaction
- Monitor airstrip for safety issues and report concerns to Aeronautics
- Submit weekly diary reports via email and monthly vehicle/equipment reports by mail
- Valid driver’s license (driving records will be reviewed)
- Ability to operate and maintain light-duty equipment and tools
- Comfortable working independently and taking initiative
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- 54 miles north of Boise
- This is a 40-hour-per-week, one-person position
- An RV pad is provided rent-free (includes water, electricity, and gray water sump)
- On-site presence is required during the work week
- No permanent housing is currently available, but future accommodations are being considered
- A spouse or partner may volunteer if desired
