Position Summary

The Bankruptcy Specialist’s primary focus will be to monitor a portfolio of commercial non-consumer mortgage loans in various stages of bankruptcy. This will include Chapters 7,11, and 13 (some Chapter 12). They will need to ensure appropriate action is administered in a timely fashion to comply with client and bankruptcy rules and regulations.

This position will require daily running and review of reports, analyzing next steps for bankruptcy finalizations, updating systems and business groups, reviewing and responding to outside counsel emails, pulling documents and reviewing and approving invoices. Overall objective of this role is to assist the Default Department in servicing active bankruptcy accounts while minimizing risk exposure and improving net recovery dollars.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage bankruptcy operations with systems, reporting and controls to ensure cross-functional coordination while offering default/foreclosure support
  • Maintain and manage an active inventory of bankruptcy cases, ensuring all case data is complete, accurate, and updated daily within servicing platforms and tracking systems
  • Track and manage key bankruptcy milestones and court deadlines (e.g., bar dates, 341 meetings, stay relief, plan confirmation), proactively escalating risks and aging items
  • Support the preparation, review, and timely submission of proofs of claim, payment change notices, and plan-related documentation in coordination with legal counsel.
  • Monitor post-petition payment activity, suspense balances, and plan/claim impacts; partner with Cash Management and Accounting to resolve discrepancies.
  • Support cramdown workflows, plan compliance tracking, and ongoing bankruptcy case maintenance
  • Coordinate default and foreclosure workflows, including referrals, status updates, document collection, and communication with attorneys and external vendors
  • Track foreclosure milestones to ensure all required actions, approvals, and documentation are completed, compliant, and properly retained
  • Maintain accurate servicing notes, correspondence logs, and audit-ready documentation for all default and foreclosure activities
  • Perform timely and accurate system updates related to loan status changes, legal holds, default/workout flags, bankruptcy indicators, and workflow completion
  • Monitor operational queues and exception reports; identify trends, resolve breaks, and drive items to completion to prevent delays
  • Prepare and maintain recurring reports on bankruptcy and foreclosure inventory, inflows, upcoming deadlines, aged items, and key operational metrics
  • Review and approve invoices in accordance with internal controls and vendor management procedures
  • Ensure adherence to internal policies, investor/client requirements, and established control frameworks
  • Serve as an operational point of contact for bankruptcy and default servicing inquiries and status updates
  • Partner cross-functionally with Asset Management, Legal, Foreclosure, Cash Management, Investor Reporting, and Client Service teams to ensure consistent execution
  • Identify process gaps, document procedures, and recommend workflow enhancements to support continuous improvement

Skills & Requirements

  • Experience using Servicing Director (Core Financial) for loan servicing activities, including default/bankruptcy status updates and workflow processing.
  • Experience using DTS (Document Tracking/Transaction System, as applicable) for document management, case tracking, and audit support.
  • High attention to detail with consistent documentation and audit readiness mindset.
  • Strong organizational and deadline management skills; ability to manage a high-volume pipeline with accuracy and urgency.
  • Working knowledge of bankruptcy servicing concepts and workflows, including proofs of claim, plan tracking, automatic stay considerations, and post-petition payment handling

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or years of experience in related field
  • 3 years of experience in commercial loan servicing, default servicing, bankruptcy operations, or a related loan servicing role (commercial preferred)
  • Experience with servicing systems, document management tools, and Excel/Google Sheets; ability to learn new platforms quickly is required
  • Understanding both bankruptcy and foreclosure processes and protocols is mandatory as often loan files run parallel (subject to bankruptcy stay limitations), and accurate and quick resolution is necessary to ensure timely resolution
