Cosmetology Master Instructor Substitute

Substitute Instructors provide temporary instructional coverage due to instructor absences, vacancies, leaves of absence, scheduling needs, or other circumstances requiring instructional support.

While assigned, the Substitute Instructor is responsible for performing the applicable duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description and for maintaining continuity of instruction in accordance with the established curriculum, course syllabus, lesson plans, institutional policies and procedures, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Substitute Instructors are expected to:

• Deliver instruction in accordance with the approved curriculum, course objectives, and established instructional schedule.
• Maintain an appropriate, professional, and effective learning environment.
• Accurately document student attendance, academic progress, grades, and other required records, as applicable to the assignment.
• Follow established lesson plans, instructional materials, policies, and procedures to ensure continuity of instruction.
• Communicate relevant student, classroom, or instructional concerns to the appropriate academic leadership.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with all institutional policies and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
• Perform other instructional duties reasonably associated with the assigned course or program.

Substitute assignments are temporary and based on institutional need. Substitute Instructors may work on an intermittent or as-needed basis and are not guaranteed a minimum number of hours, a regular schedule, or a specific duration of employment or assignment.

Standard Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Development

• Deliver high-quality instruction aligned with curriculum and accreditation standards
• Prepare students for state board licensure and industry success
• Provide constructive, timely, and encouraging feedback on student performance and assignments
• Offer individualized and small-group support to strengthen skills and learning outcomes
• Provide tutoring and instructional assistance as needed
• Guide students through client consultations, service recommendations, and professional techniques 
• Provide real-time coaching in a hands-on clinic environment, adapting to student skill levels

Student Engagement & Retention

• Foster a positive, encouraging learning environment that promotes confidence in the cosmetology profession
• Monitor attendance, academic progress, and completion of learning activities
• Proactively communicate with and support students to promote retention and success
• Send welcome communications to students prior to course start

Clinic Operations & Customer Experience

• Supervise clinic floor operations to ensure service quality, technical accuracy, and professionalism 
• Model and reinforce exceptional customer service, communication, and client retention practices
• Address and resolve client concerns in a timely and professional manner
• Collaborate with Customer Relations to coordinate clinic schedules and optimize guest experience

Compliance &Professional Standards

• Maintain compliance with OSHA standards and all applicable safety requirements
• Adhere to policies of the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and accrediting bodies
• Model CHE’s CARES values: Collaborative, Adaptable, Resilient, Empowered, Student-Focused 
• Stay current on industry trends, techniques, and best practices

Administrative & Operational Responsibilities

•  Maintain accurate records, including attendance, grades, and transcripts in Canvas
•  Monitor and manage classroom and clinic inventory; order supplies as needed
•  Ensure classrooms, labs, and workstations are clean, organized, and fully stocked
•  Identify and escalate issues related to curriculum, technology, or operations

• Establish and support clear performance expectations aligned with student success, retention, and program outcomes
• Collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty and staff to achieve program goals
• Continuously improve instructional quality through feedback, training and professional development

• Maintain consistent attendance and adherence to work schedules and institutional policies

Upon request and approval of the Campus Director

• Attend graduation ceremonies and required institutional events
• Participate in school-sponsored activities and student engagement initiatives
• Complete required professional development and in-service training
• Perform other duties as assigned to support program and institutional needs

Minimum Requirements: Current Oklahoma Master Instructor License with a minimum of three recent years’ verifiable experience working as a cosmetologist required.

Substitute Instructors must meet the same applicable education, credential, licensure, certification, occupational experience, and/or faculty qualification requirements established for the instructional area in which they are assigned.

Instructors should have a natural talent for teaching and good interpersonal skills. A good instructor should be patient and understanding, take a hands on approach to ensure every student gets the required knowledge to succeed in the beauty industry. Must be accessible to students and faculty.
