Description

Community Health Alliance is looking for full-time Behavioral Health Medical Assistant/Assistive Personnel. Join our talented team of Medical Assistants that focus on serving the community and helping those in need by creating healthy outcomes for patients of every income. 

We operate six convenient locations throughout Reno and Sparks, providing comprehensive, top-quality medical services, dental and pediatric care, behavioral health, low-cost pharmacies, nourishing food pantries, and more. 

The Behavioral Health Medical Assistant (MA) is an integral member of the care team who supports providers in delivering safe, high-quality behavioral health medication management services in an ambulatory clinic setting. The MA is responsible for patient intake, rooming, vital signs, assisting with procedures, administering medications, and completing laboratory testing. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory standards, while promoting compassionate patient care, teamwork, and continuous improvement of clinic operations.

Qualifications


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for evaluation and/or procedures.
  • Obtain and record vital signs, medical histories, allergies, and chief complaints.
  • Administer medications and immunizations under provider direction.
  • Assist with exams, procedures, and documentation as directed by provider.
  • Collect and process in-office lab specimens (urine drug screens, strep, hemocult, etc.).
  • Provide patient education and support regarding medications, treatments, and health maintenance.
  • Facilitate referral appointments and follow-up scheduling.
  • Provide emotional support and compassion to patients.
  • Accurately enter patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and practice management system (EPM).
  • Maintain documentation of vitals, medications, testing, injections, and procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy in logs and reports, including immunizations, labs, and supply management.
  • Identify and report documentation errors to provider or supervisor.
  • Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, CHA policies, and infection control protocols.
  • Monitor for expired medications and ensure safe storage/handling of supplies.
  • Maintain sterilization of instruments and perform routine equipment checks.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient records and financial/medical information.
  • Participate as an active member of the care team to enhance patient flow and clinic efficiency.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with patients, providers, and colleagues.
  • Support CHA’s mission, values, and community presence through professional conduct.
  • Attend staff meetings, required trainings, and participate in quality improvement efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of medical office practices, patient care protocols, and clinic procedures.
  • Knowledge of in-office laboratory testing and specimen handling.
  • Proficiency in medication administration and immunization techniques.
  • Familiarity with psychiatric diagnoses and behavioral health care needs.
  • Skill in operating EMR/EPM systems and basic office/medical equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and professionally with diverse populations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policy.
  • Ability to perform accurate dosage calculations.
  • Ability to remain flexible, exercise good judgment, and respond to changing priorities.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum 2 years of recent medical assistant experience preferred,
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • RMA or CMA national certification preferred.
  • Experience in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to see, hear, and speak adequately to perform patient care duties (e.g., calculate and administer medication doses, converse with patients over phone/in-person).
  • Must maintain a valid Driver’s License for transportation or courier duties as needed.
