Job Title: Janitor
Reports to: Janitorial Department Manager
Status: Non-Exempt, Union Classification Level 1
Shifts: 2 days a week, 3am-11am and 5:30am-2pm
POSITION SUMMARY
Janitors play a vital role in creating a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for shoppers and staff at the Community Food Co-op. This position is responsible for daily cleaning and upkeep of the store’s interior and exterior, minor repairs, and responding to basic maintenance requests. Janitors also contribute to an inclusive, customer-friendly atmosphere through positive interactions with community members and staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Facility & Grounds Maintenance
- Clean restrooms, break rooms, floors, equipment, and fixtures according to schedule and cleanliness standards.
- Perform daily floor care including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and buffing; conduct periodic stripping and waxing.
- Maintain exterior cleanliness by sweeping entrances, managing litter, and addressing snow/ice as needed.
- Complete assigned cleaning tasks and special projects in a timely manner.
Customer Service & Communication
- Provide friendly, respectful service to shoppers, staff, and vendors.
- Offer assistance or direction to customers when appropriate.
- Be familiar with Co-op policies, promotions, and membership system; respond to general inquiries clearly and courteously.
Safety, Repairs & Reporting
- Operate cleaning tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Identify and report facility issues or repair needs to Department Manager or Store Manager.
- Support a safe work environment by following cleaning protocols and safety procedures.
Team & Organizational Engagement
- Participate in team meetings and department check-ins.
- Support Co-op values, goals, and promotions through positive contribution and engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned in alignment with department and Co-op needs.
- Experience with commercial cleaning or facility maintenance preferred but not required.
- Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team setting.
- Capable of delivering consistent, friendly customer service in a fast-paced setting.
- Ability to learn, apply, and maintain certification in Bloodborne Pathogens safety training (training provided).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Requirements
Mobility & Endurance
- Stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours).
- Frequently bend, reach, twist, and perform repetitive motions such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and lifting.
- Climb ladders occasionally and safely.
Lifting & Carrying
- Regularly lift and move items weighing 10–40 lbs.
- Occasionally lift items up to 50 lbs.
Tool & Equipment Use
- Safely and efficiently operate janitorial tools and floor care equipment (e.g., buffers, vacuums, mops).
- Maintain manual dexterity for handling cleaning tools and equipment controls.
Work Environment
- Tolerate moderate to loud noise levels (e.g., equipment, music, voices).
- Work in a variety of conditions, including cold storage areas and outdoor environments.
- Safely use and tolerate exposure to FDA-approved cleaning chemicals and common allergens.
Safety Practices
- Follow all safety procedures and sanitation protocols.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Report equipment malfunctions, hazards, or safety concerns immediately.
- Demonstrate awareness of surroundings to help prevent accidents.
