OUWC Student Assistant
The Student Assistant (SA) interacts with students, staff, faculty, community members and local organizations who utilize the Othello-UW Commons (OUWC) for events, classes, workshops, meetings and independent study/co-working space.
Description
- Oversee operation of the facility weekday evenings (Mon-Thurs, 5:00-10:00p.m.) and weekends (Sat-Sun, 9:00a.m.-8:00p.m.) (hours vary each week)
- Open and close the classrooms and offices
- Setup/reset the rooms before and after classes and programs
- Communicate with the property management to ensure the security of the facility
- Work directly with Program Manager to resolve general building, custodial and common area issues
- Support student engagement efforts (student study drop-in hours, programming, etc.)
Required qualifications
- Comfortable working with a diverse groups and individuals
- Ability to interact politely and respectfully with visitors, including community members, UW staff, students and faculty
- Reliability, timeliness and ability to work independently
- Ability to balance shifting priorities, problem solve and communicate with supervisor
- Ability to retain and convey information about our principles and goals, as well as about past, current and upcoming events
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to check work for accuracy
- Willingness to work evening hours (between 5-10pm) and occasional weekend hours
Desired skills and abilities
- Familiarity with SE Seattle communities
- Work and/or lived experience with community-based organizations and/or BIPOC communities
- Ability to commit to approximately 12-19 hours per week during the academic year, with a possibility of similar hours extending through summer
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Comfort with, and aptitude in, working AV equipment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
- Ability to lift/move 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally for classroom/event setup and tear down

- Compensation is $16.69 per hour. This position is work study eligible.
