The Student Performing Arts Center (PAC) Technician is an essential part-time role responsible for the technical support for events, performances, and rentals occurring in the Alexandria Area High School PAC. This position ensures the successful operation of lighting, sound, and staging systems to provide a high-quality experience for both performers and audience members. The Technician serves as a primary technical resource, upholding the professional standard and safety of the venue.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lighting Operation:
- Operating and programming the lighting console for performances, rehearsals, and rental events.
- Assisting in the hanging and focusing of theatrical lighting fixtures.
- Troubleshooting basic lighting issues during events.
- Sound Engineering:
- Setting up, running, and striking microphones, speakers, and sound equipment.
- Mixing and running the soundboard for various events, including musical performances, plays, presentations, and assemblies.
- Managing audio playback and recording as required.
- Staging & Rigging:
- Assisting with the setup and strike of scenery, backdrops, and stage props.
- Configuring stage layouts, including risers, platforms, and curtains (main traveler, legs, borders).
- Ensuring safe practices regarding counterweight rigging systems, if applicable and after receiving proper training.
- Rental Support:
- Serving as the primary technical contact for external groups renting the PAC space.
- Communicating with renters regarding their technical needs and ensuring their setup is completed accurately and on time.
- Supervising the use of PAC equipment by rental groups to prevent damage.
- Maintenance & Safety:
- Reporting any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards immediately to the supervisor.
- Maintaining a clean and organized booth, storage, PAC.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Enrollment: Must be a currently enrolled 9-11th grade at Alexandria Area High School and enrolled in theatre production class, supporting the high school musical or related technical sound and lighting experiences.
- Interest: Demonstrated interest in technical theatre, stagecraft, sound engineering, or related fields.
- Reliability: Excellent punctuality, reliability, and a strong sense of responsibility. Events often occur outside of school hours (evenings and weekends), requiring a flexible schedule.
- Teamwork & Communication: Ability to take direction and work effectively both independently and as part of a technical team; strong communication skills for interacting with directors, performers, staff, and rental clients.
- Problem-Solving: A proactive attitude and the ability to think critically and troubleshoot issues quickly under pressure.
- Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and comfortable working at heights (on ladders or lifts) to assist focus lights, after receiving appropriate safety instruction.
Training Available: Comprehensive, hands-on training will be provided for all equipment and responsibilities, including safe operation of lighting consoles, soundboards, and staging mechanics. Compensation: $18-25 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
