MI Healthy Climate Fellows:
Join the MI Healthy Climate Fellows (MHC Fellows) and make a lasting impact on Michigan's carbon-neutral future! The MHC Fellows program accelerates Michigan's climate action through capacity building and leadership development. Fellows serve across the state to advance the MI Healthy Climate Plan's (MHCP) goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plan, unveiled by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in April 2022, aims to avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis; create good-paying jobs; position Michigan as a climate action leader; and build a healthier and more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable Michigan for all Michiganders.

At the Michigan Green Building Collaborative, our mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built, and operated in a way that improves the quality of life in Michigan. We believe in the power of partnership to create lasting impact. For over 20 years, our organization has fostered collaboration between stakeholders, shared resources, hosted conferences, and established cornerstone initiatives that cultivate a sustainable future. In 2024, we transitioned to the Michigan Green Building Collaborative (MiGBC) from the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan to expand our focus to be state-wide while maintaining our role as thought partner and resource. Our programs include the Michigan Battle of the Buildings, the Grand Rapids 2030 District, the Lansing 2030 District, the Grand Rapids Energy Assistance Program, and the EHZero project. In addition to running these programs, we strive to be a hub to facilitate easy access to case studies, tools, and resources related to sustainability and energy efficiency.

MHC Fellow Role and Responsibilities:

Conduct outreach to local businesses in Grand Rapids to recruit Energy Assistance Program participants

Collaborate with community partners (e.g., Small Business Association of Michigan and local nonprofits) to promote the program

Request and collect building energy data from utilities for participating businesses

Input building energy data into ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

Support the development of customized energy assessment reports in collaboration with the Senior Programs Manager and the Small Business Association of Michigan

Maintain ongoing communication with program participants to ensure engagement and support

Follow up with businesses on the implementation of recommended energy efficiency measures

Add case studies, success stories, and technical resources to the MiGBC website's resource hub

Assist with MI Battle of the Buildings data uploads into Energy Star Portfolio Manager

Empower the community to access climate resources by planning meetings, educational programs, and/or other activities to consistently share information.

Participate in MHC Fellows development shared learning and collaboration activities including four MHC Fellow in-person convenings and, MHC Fellows monthly virtual trainings (will be provided by program staff).

Fellows will host a community input session with their host site to collect community feedback and advance the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan.

Position Type: Remote

MHC Fellows can expect to report to serve in a remote capacity. Interested MHC Fellow should live within the community and/or have the ability to commute to community events. There are some in-office days the MHC Fellow can attend when staff meet but no set in-person schedule.

Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 8 am - 4 pm
