POSITION SUMMARY:The Senior Accounting Manager is a key operational leader responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting operations, strengthening internal controls, and supporting the modernization of financial systems and processes. This role requires hands-on expertise in accounts payable, payroll accounting, financial systems implementation, month-end close, and policy and procedure development. The Senior Accounting Manager plays a critical role in creating a reliable, efficient, and well-documented financial infrastructure that supports organizational accuracy, compliance, and decision-making.Supervision: This position reports to the Controller within the Finance & Administration team.Classification: Full-time, Exempt. RESPONSIBILITIESCore Accounting Operations Manage day-to-day accounting workflows, including accounts payable, payroll accounting, cash receipts, credit card reconciliation, and general ledger maintenance. Ensure accurate coding, documentation, and approval routing for all AP and expense transactions. Review and oversee weekly AP processing, ACH payments, and staff reimbursements. Maintain monthly reconciliation schedules for all balance sheet accounts. Payroll Accounting & Compliance Partner with HR to ensure payroll accuracy through ADP. Prepare and reconcile payroll-related journal entries, including taxes, benefits, PTO, and accruals. Maintain payroll documentation and schedules for compliance and audit readiness. Financial Systems & Process ImprovementLead or support implementation and optimization of NetSuite (ERP), ADP (Payroll/HRIS), Expensify (Expense Management), Salesforce (Grant/Contract Inputs), and SharePoint (Document Storage & SOPs). Improve financial workflows, automation, approvals, documentation, and data integrity across finance functions. Support system testing, configuration changes, and ongoing enhancements. Policies, Procedures & Internal ControlsDevelop, update, and maintain financial policies, SOPs, and process documentation across accounts payable, payroll, travel and expense reimbursement, credit card usage, procurement, reconciliations, and month-end close. Strengthen internal controls and ensure consistent organizational compliance. Financial Reporting & Close Lead month-end and year-end close processes on a timely schedule. Review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Support internal financial reporting and assist with GAAP-compliant financial statement preparation. Audit, Grants & CompliancePrepare audit schedules and documentation for the annual audit. Support grant revenue recognition, invoicing, and restriction release entries.Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and funding requirements. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Team Support Provide guidance and coaching to accounting staff. Directly supervises the Accounting Specialist and/or Staff Accountants, providing coaching, task delegation, performance management, and professional development support. Work closely with Programs, HR, Development, and Operations to support financial processes and resolve issues. Communicate accounting concepts clearly to non-financial colleagues. QUALIFICATIONSRequired Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; OR 10 years of directly relevant accounting experience in lieu of a degree. Strong hands-on experience managing accounts payable, payroll accounting, general ledger operations, financial system implementation, and policy/SOP development. Minimum 3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience. Strong working knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, and grant compliance. Proficiency in ERP systems (NetSuite strongly preferred) and advanced Excel. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organizational skills, and ability to work effectively in a remote environment. Preferred Qualifications CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred but not required.
