Shelter Monitor (Part-Time)
Community CARES – Shippensburg Family Shelter

Community CARES is seeking part-time Shelter Monitors to provide coverage at our confidential family shelter serving parents and children.
One of the Shelter Monitors positions would cover overnight shifts Friday-Sunday, at least 2 weekends per month.
Available Positions
- Second-Shift Shelter Monitor (2:30pm-10:30pm)
- Second-Shift Shelter Monitor (2:30pm-6:30pm or 6:30pm-10:30pm)
- Weekend/Floating Shelter Monitor (First & Second Shifts)
This is a part-time position (16–24 hours per week, up to 25 hours maximum), with opportunities for additional hours as needed.
Shift Times
- First Shift: 6:30am–2:30pm
- Second Shift: 2:30pm–10:30pm
- Overnight Shift: 10:30pm–6:30am
Weekend/Floating Position Requirements
- Must work a minimum of one weekend per month (Friday–Sunday)
- Shifts may be first, second, or overnight and will vary week to week
- Must fulfill the two-weekend minimum during the 90-day probationary period
Position Overview
- Shelter Monitors provide overnight, weekend, and holiday coverage while ensuring a safe, supportive environment for families.
Responsibilities include:
- Answering phones and providing client support using empowerment-based models
- Modeling healthy relationships and non-violent conflict resolution
- Maintaining shelter safety and security
- Supporting daily operations and collaborating with shelter staff
Core Responsibilities
- Participate in shift change reports at the beginning and end of each shift
- Support clients in maintaining health and safety standards
- Provide guidance on shelter policies and procedures
- Assist with room cleaning, routine maintenance, and donation inventory
- Monitor security cameras and ensure doors/windows are secured
- Respond appropriately to emergencies
- Complete shelter intakes with support as needed
- Prepare and serve meals; support recuperative care clients
- Document shift activities, incidents, and statistics in required logs and forms
- Attend monthly staff meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Experience in a residential or similar setting preferred
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and perform light housekeeping
- Ability to support survivors in crisis with empathy while maintaining professional boundaries
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer proficiency
- Organized, self-motivated, resourceful, and team-oriented
- Ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively in emergencies
Background Check Requirements
- Because this is a family shelter serving minors, we follow the same background standards used by schools.
Required clearances:
- ChildLine Background Check
- FBI Background Check
- PA State Background Check
Preferred:
Applicants who submit copies of all three completed clearances prior to review will be guaranteed a first-round interview.

Applicants without completed clearances may still apply; however, preference will be given to those who can verify approval to work with minors in Pennsylvania. If hired without current clearances, they must be completed within the first three days of employment during onboarding.
Any charges that would disqualify an individual from working in a school or daycare setting will also disqualify candidates for this position.
