Supervised By: Teacher or Bus Driver

Supervises: No direct supervisory responsibility

Primary Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Teacher, program aides in facilitating lesson plans and classroom activities. Under the supervision of the Bus Driver, the program aide assists in maintaining order on the bus. As a front-line representative of CAAM Early Childhood, the position holder is required to ensure the safety and security of children and families that he/she comes in contact with and represent the agency values and mission.

Essential Job Functions:

An aide in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the volunteer may be asked to perform.

Classroom Setting

1. Monitors and assists students during classroom activities, including large and small group time, mealtime, language and literacy activities, music and movement, work time, outdoor play, rest period and other activities. Encourages and motivates students to take part.

2. Assists groups of children to maintain safety and ensure children are properly engaged in activities.

3. Assists children with personal tasks including dressing and undressing of outdoor clothing, packing backpacks, hand washing and tooth brushing, and mealtime.

4. Assists with classroom set-up, take-down, clean-up and general housekeeping duties.

5. Observes children's classroom behaviors and reports issues to Teacher or Assistant Teacher.

6. Attends staff meetings, parent meetings, and other trainings when appropriate.

7. Participates in planning classroom activities as requested.

8. Performs other duties as requested.

Bus Setting

1. Escorts children to and from the bus and returns them to the appropriate person at school or home. Assists children with getting settled upon arrival, remembering backpacks, and other needs.

2. Enforces safety procedures and behavioral rules. Ensures children are properly

positioned and seated on bus, and properly fastened in the child restraint system.

3. Promotes positive interactions on the bus by stimulating children with songs, games, stories, and other activities

4. Ensures that parent or appropriate caregiver is aware of daily schedule and acknowledges each child’s safe return.

5. Acts as a liaison between parents and teachers, relaying special requests or needs. Delivers notes, papers or other materials as requested.

6. Observes children daily and reports behavioral or health issues and other potential concerns to parents and teachers.

7. Performs other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

  • Educational requirements include a minimum of an eighth grade education.
  • Successful completion of comprehensive background check
  • Basic knowledge of the practices used in maintaining a clean and sanitary classroom environment, and in the safe handling of food.
  • Basic knowledge of the techniques used in interacting with children in a positive manner
  • Skill in facilitating interactive activities and in engaging students.
  • Knowledge of bus safety procedures and requirements
  • Basic knowledge of bus communication system and appropriate calling procedures.
  • Ability to observe student behavior and identify and report issues.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other employees, children and their families.
  • Ability to travel to other locations.
  • CPR and First Aide certification

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in an early childhood setting where they are regularly required to:

  • Interact with children at their physical level
  • Demonstrate gross and fine motor actions and activities
  • Respond quickly to keep children safe, including holding, lifting or moving a child
  • Verbally communicate clearly and effectively with children and coworkers

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to loud.
