Company Description Community Academies of New Orleans (CANO) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2020 to strengthen educational opportunities while honoring the cultures and communities of its schools. In 2023, CANO converted Esperanza Academy into New Orleans’ first 50/50 Spanish–English Dual Language Program. As the only program in the city providing equal instruction in both English and Spanish, Esperanza Academy is designed for students to become bilingual and biliterate by 8th grade. Role Description The Emergent Bilingual (“ESL”) Teacher is a full-time, on-site position located at Esperanza Academy in New Orleans, LA. The teacher will plan and deliver daily instruction that supports multilingual learners in developing English language proficiency while valuing and leveraging their home language, with a focus on Spanish and English. Responsibilities include designing standards-aligned lessons, differentiating instruction, monitoring student progress, and using data to inform teaching practices. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues and families to create an inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment and to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. Additional duties include participating in professional development, contributing to school-wide initiatives, and engaging in ongoing communication with caregivers and the broader school community.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in English language development and second language acquisition, including planning and delivering instruction for emergent bilingual learners.
- Proficiency in Spanish and English, with the ability to support bilingual and biliterate learning in both languages.
- Experience with classroom management, student engagement strategies, and creating inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments.
- Ability to assess language and academic progress, analyze data, and use results to adjust instruction and provide targeted supports.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills for working with colleagues, families, and community partners in support of students.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, Linguistics, or related field; teaching certification and ESL/bilingual endorsement preferred.
- Experience working with multilingual, multicultural student populations, ideally in dual language or ESL settings.
- Commitment to educational equity, advocacy for emergent bilingual students, and ongoing professional learning.
