The Student Support Coordinator prioritizes resources and creates equitable opportunities by partnering with school staff, local communities, and resource partners to ensure additional support is available for the students. The Student Support Coordinator will provide culturally sensitive interventions, services, and support by working closely with diverse stakeholders, which will help promote positive behavior, social-emotional well-being, and academic success for all students.
Role Considerations in Rural Communities
While the foundational duties of Student Support Coordinators remain consistent across all CISNEW sites, rural communities present unique environmental and logistical complexities that require additional competencies. Coordinators in these areas operate with increased independence and must demonstrate advanced problem-solving, relationship-building, and adaptability in their daily work.
- Greater Autonomy: Rural SSCs often work independently with limited on-site or nearby CISNEW colleagues or supervisors. The role demands a high level of initiative and confidence in decision-making.
- Resource Navigation: Many rural schools are located in resource deserts, requiring coordinators to build new relationships with nontraditional service providers and maximize limited options for basic needs and mental health services.
- Broader Student Support Range: Rural SSCs may serve students across a full K–12 span, requiring a wider breadth of developmental knowledge and flexibility in programming.
- Increased Travel and Time Management: Rural coordinators often travel significant distances to their assigned schools or community resources, adding logistical complexity to daily responsibilities.
- Community Visibility and Integration: Smaller, close-knit communities often require heightened sensitivity around confidentiality and deeper engagement in local culture and dynamics.
- School Infrastructure Limitations: With fewer on-site staff and limited space or programming infrastructure, SSCs must be highly adaptable and creative in delivering services.
These factors are taken into consideration when determining equitable compensation and support strategies for SSCs placed in rural school environments.
