POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) provides peer support services to individuals who are struggling with mental health or substance use issues. Using their personal experience in recovery, the PRS helps to foster hope and motivation, supports individuals in accessing services, and serves as a role model in demonstrating recovery is possible. The PRS works collaboratively with clinical staff and community organizations to assist individuals in reaching their recovery goals. This position requires compliance with CommuniHealth Services’ (CHS) written standards, including the Compliance Plan and policies and procedures (including the Code of Conduct).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Peer Support:
· Provide direct, one-on-one support to individuals in recovery by sharing lived experiences and coping strategies.
· Actively listen to individuals' concerns, provide emotional support, and encourage self-advocacy.
· Facilitate group discussions and peer-led recovery meetings as needed.
2. Advocacy:
· Advocate for individuals’ rights and choices within treatment settings, encouraging them to voice their needs.
· Help individuals navigate community resources, health systems, and other services.
· Encourage empowerment and personal responsibility for recovery.
3. Recovery Planning:
· Assist individuals in developing and working toward their personal recovery goals.
· Collaborate with the clinical team to provide input from the peer perspective.
· Support individuals in creating wellness recovery action plans (WRAPs) or similar tools.
4. Education and Resources:
· Provide education about recovery, wellness strategies, and community-based resources.
· Connect individuals to services such as housing, employment, treatment options, and social support networks.
· Share information on coping skills, relapse prevention, and wellness self-management.
5. Modeling and Leadership:
· Serve as a positive role model by maintaining one’s own personal recovery and demonstrating healthy coping mechanisms.
· Engage in continuous personal development and training related to recovery and peer support services.
· Foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all individuals regardless of their background or challenges.
6. Collaboration:
· Work collaboratively with treatment providers, counselors, case managers, and other team members.
· Provide insight into the lived experience of recovery to inform the broader treatment approach.
7. Documentation:
· Maintain accurate and timely documentation of interactions and progress notes.
8. Maintains strictest confidentiality and adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations as well as compliance with HRSA regulations.
9. Treats staff, providers, visitors and patients with dignity and respect.
10. Completes required CHS training, maintains compliance with and knowledge of all CHS departmental, facility specific and system-wide policy and procedure, attends mandatory departmental meetings and/or trainings, and follows CHS Mission, Vision, and Values in the delivery of all services.
11. In addition to the outlined duties above, as a patient-centered medical home, the incumbent fulfills the principles and theories outlined in organizational policies including assisting navigating patients as needed through the health system, making appropriate referrals to case/care management, communicating with the healthcare team to address patient/family/caregiver specific needs, etc.
12. This position may require work beyond normal working hours.
13. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education/licensure:
1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist
3. Life Support Training
Skills/Experience:
1. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
2. Preferred one (1) year experience working in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or a related field.
3. Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles.
4. Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public.
5. Ability to perform well- organized and detail-oriented work while maintaining privacy in all aspects of the job.
6. Ability to facilitate a connection with telehealth prescriber via teleconferencing and support communication of needed information to and from the prescriber for BH patients.
