Position Description Summary
Commonwealth University – Bloomsburg is pleased to invite applications for the full-time, non-tenure track (full-time, temporary) position of Director of Choral Activities in the Department of Music, Theatre & Dance beginning August 2025.
The successful candidate will be a dedicated choral musician with demonstrated accomplishment as a conductor and educator with primary duties of conducting the CU-Bloomsburg Concert Choir and TTBB choir, and coordinating with other associated faculty in matters related to ensemble budgeting, recruitment, program development, and administrative responsibilities. Secondary duties may include work in one or more of the following areas, pending the successful candidate’s expertise: music theory, music technology, modern/pop music, choral methods and techniques, or applied voice.
Preference will be given to applicants who have successful undergraduate teaching and conducting experience, an earned doctorate or equivalent professional experience, are adept at community engagement, and are committed to student recruitment. They will assist in facilitating on-campus service and community outreach opportunities for local schools.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a collaborative attitude and assist in ongoing program assessment, revision, and enhancement. The successful candidate will also work alongside fellow music faculty to develop choral music curricula and maintain NASM standards for vocal music education. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain relationships with local and regional K-12 music educators, maintain an active schedule of recruitment and guest conducting, provide workshops and actively participate in professional choral and music education organizations, and develop regional and national visibility as an ensemble director and educator. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated success in engaging college students in the classroom, studio, rehearsal space, and community. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to mentoring students and should possess significant experience with trends in public school settings.

The Department of Music, Theatre & Dance is committed to stimulating a continuous pursuit of knowledge, understanding and skills by students and faculty.
The music unit offers the following NASM-accredited degree programs: The Bachelor of Music (BM) degree with majors in Music Education, Music Performance, Music Business, and Music Technology and the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a major in music, CU-Bloomsburg is one of three campuses that make up Commonwealth University of PA, (a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education) with the other two campuses in Mansfield and Loch Haven, PA.

Students at Bloomsburg study with distinguished faculty who are eager to help them achieve their performance and educational goals. The department features numerous large and small performing ensembles, including orchestra, bands, choirs, and chamber ensembles. Graduates are regularly accepted into graduate programs in music throughout the country, are active as performers throughout the United States, and include some of the finest music educators in the northeast. Bloomsburg graduates proudly have an almost 100% placement rate between job placement and graduate school. The Bloomsburg music unit offers everything an aspiring musician needs to succeed. The music unit at Bloomsburg has 15 faculty members and a student body of about 40 majors. The department is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The campus is located within Columbia County. The campus is centrally located with Philadelphia just under 2 hours south, Harrisburg 1.5 hours south, and New York City – 3 hours east.

Qualifying Experience and Education (Minimum/Preferred)
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in music
  • Demonstrated success working with associated ensembles


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree in music;
  • Experience teaching at the college/university level;
  • Demonstrated teaching at the PK-12 level;
  • Demonstrated success with ensemble and institution recruitment and retention
  • Knowledge of standard choral repertoire, experience organizing collaborative concerts, and a forward-thinking approach to repertoire and configurations that expand the boundaries of the choral genre.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in other music areas (music theory, music education, applied lessons, voice or instrument techniques, student teacher supervision, music composition, music technology, and/or commercial music)

Background Clearances
Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors.
