Position Summary Information

Position Purpose
This position provides technical and operational support for both classroom technology systems and the university’s One Card and access control systems.
Provide functional services and operations in support of ID card office applications services; user assistance and operations support; and other client service duties as assigned.

Provide IT services and operations in support of technology equipment and applications services to academic classrooms; Programs Extron/Crestron room controls and installs and configures classroom AV equipment, perform hardware and software installs and upgrades; install new operating systems; repair desktop systems; perform equipment and software maintenance; evaluates and repairs classroom technology equipment; and other client service duties as assigned.

Occasional weekend or alternate work hours and limited travel to other campuses may be required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Description of Duties
Classroom & Instructional Technology Support (50%)
  • Provides technical support for classroom presentation systems, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AV equipment such as projectors, displays, control systems (including Extron, Crestron, or AMX), and related hardware.
  • Coordinates configuration, setup, and maintenance of classroom and instructional media equipment, ensuring functionality across university learning spaces.
  • Provides support for technology-related campus events and conferences.
  • Develops and delivers training to university staff and student workers on classroom technology and access control programming.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new technology solutions related to classroom and access control systems.
  • On-call and weekend work required as needed for system maintenance or event support.


Desktop & Network Support (10%)
  • Installs and configures desktop hardware, software, and peripheral equipment; troubleshoots and repairs computers, printers, and network devices.
  • Provides client support for desktop applications, system upgrades, and operating system installation.
  • Performs installation and maintenance of cabling and wiring required to connect hardware to the network.

One Card System & Access Control Management (40%)
  • Manages classroom and One Card system technology integration, ensuring proper operation of online and offline access components.
  • Provides technical support for One Card system components including access control devices, locksets, POS readers, value transfer stations, and card production equipment.
  • Diagnoses and resolves hardware, software, and communication issues related to One Card systems, both during and after normal business hours.
  • Coordinates and verifies data integration and fidelity between One Card programs and related systems such as Banner, The Housing Director, and Blackboard.
  • Programs access control schedules and configurations for campus events and Residence Life operations.
  • Administers and maintains Blackboard Community System software and other cashless commerce systems associated with campus dining, vending, and laundry.
  • Manages day-to-day operations of the BU Card Center, including student staff hiring, training, supervision, and ID production.
  • Maintains technical documentation, inventory control, and equipment maintenance records.
  • Coordinates vendor support and ensures equipment purchases and replacements remain within established budgets.
  • Assists in implementing, administering, and maintaining system security standards and policies.
  • Provides on-call technical support as required, including weekends and alternate work schedules.

Decision Making
This position exercises independent judgement within established procedures and technical standards.
The incumbent prioritizes work assignments, determines appropriate methods for troubleshooting and resolving system and equipment issues, and recommends equipment purchases or configuration.
Matters involving budget authority, personnel actions, or significant system policy changes are referred to the supervisor.

Fiscal Responsibility
Monitors and tracks supply usage, service contracts, and repair costs for classroom and card systems. Provides cost estimates and recommendations for the replacement or upgrade of system components.

Supervisory Responsibility
Provides guidance and scheduling for work study or student staff assigned to the Card Office. Assigns and reviews work, trains new student employees, and ensures adherence to office procedures.

Minimum Requirements Profile
One year of experience as an Information Technology Trainee or Information Technology Technician;
OR
One year of information technology experience in applications development or applications maintenance, networking or desktop services, web site development or web site design, or other information technology support/administration services, and an Associate’s Degree in any information technology field;
OR
Three years of information technology experience in applications development or applications maintenance, networking or desktop services, web site development or web site design, or other information technology support/administration services;
OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Knowledge of data integration between enterprise systems such as Banner and Blackboard.
  • Knowledge of hardware and software troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to diagnose, analyze, and resolve complex technical problems independently.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and system documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and vendors.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
