What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plumber Helper position at Commonwealth Plumbing Systems?
Commonwealth Plumbing Systems installs the plumbing in new houses and townhouses. We're based in Richmond and have a few crews in the Roanoke area that covers Roanoke, Salem, Christiansburg, and Lynchburg. We're looking for a helper to work alongside one of our Roanoke plumbers and learn the trade from the ground up.
No experience needed; we'll teach you. What we need is someone who shows up on time, doesn't mind hard work, and wants a trade they can build a career on.
What you'd be doing
- Working one-on-one with an experienced plumber every day on new houses
- Carrying and setting toilets, water heaters, tubs, and fixtures.
- Unloading material and keeping the job site clean
- Learning trim-out: setting toilets and sinks, hooking up water heaters, installing faucets and fixtures
Why new construction is a good place to start
Residential new construction is one of the most straightforward ways into plumbing. The work repeats house after house, so you learn fast and actually get good at it. The things you pick up here carries over to service, remodel, or commercial work later if you decide to go that direction.
What you need
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation. We don't have a shop in Roanoke, so you'll drive yourself to job sites around Roanoke and Salem. For jobs out in Christiansburg or Lynchburg, you'll meet up with the plumber and ride out together.
- The ability to lift and carry heavy things all day: toilets, water heaters, tubs, sometimes up stairs.
- Your own basic hand tools: hammer, nut drivers, hacksaw, tape measure, channel locks, screwdrivers, etc. Anything beyond that, we provide.
- Reliability. On time, every day.
- A willingness to learn and take direction.
Pay and schedule
$17 – $18 per hour to start with raises as you pick up skills. Full-time, Monday through Friday, daytime hours. We're not guaranteed 40 hours a week, but we're pretty busy so that's the norm.
How the interview works
Since we don't have an office in Roanoke, you'll meet our branch manager at one of our job sites. Come see what the work actually looks like, ask whatever you want, and we'll go from there.
