The Opportunity: Assistant Operations Manager – Richmond Marine Terminal

The main objective of this position is to supervise barge, yard, warehouse, and interchange operations and activities with the goal of meeting departmental objectives, controlling operating costs, complying with safety guidelines, and maximizing productivity. 

What You’ll Do: Responsibilities

  • Conducts morning safety briefings, continuously promoting safety awareness and regulatory compliance (OSHA). 
  • Plans and oversees daily barge operations, coordination of yard stacking and load and stow plans.  
  • Communicates and coordinates with onsite customers for their operations. 
  • Manages container inventory and yard lay out on the terminal.  
  • Troubleshoots N4 issues and coordinate hardware of interchange.  
  • Monitors and approves payroll.   
  • Coordinates and leads team activities, while providing feedback to managers and assisting in decision making. Exercises discretion in resolving complaints, grievances, discipline, and concerns that arise. 
  • Manages barge schedule, communicates with customers and ship lines to coordinate export loading and import discharging and stacking.   
  • Communicates with customers, vendors, and motor carriers and assists with solving issues or problems. Remains accessible to internal and external customers to cultivate a rapport while building strong customer relations. 
  • Tracks daily and weekly production data. Prepares and provides reports to upper management. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
  • The Port of Virginia is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year operation, schedule and location may vary based on the needs of the operation.

Education

High School diploma or GED equivalent required.

Licenses, Certifications, and Credentials

Valid driver’s license; Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Work Experience

Three years of related experience in transportation or operations required. One of those years must have been in a leadership capacity. Education can supplement experience.
