Job Duties
Serves as an advocate for the veteran-claimant to ensure full benefit entitlement under all laws enacted for the benefit of veterans and their dependents. Represents veterans throughout the appeals process before administrative boards and, if properly licensed, US federal courts. Assists with quality reviews of routine appeals and advises Veteran Service Representatives on all aspects of the appeals process as needed. Support all Benefits Regional Offices appeals inquiry as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to veterans’ benefits. Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations pertaining to veterans’ benefits. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent research, legal analysis, and writing skills. Experience in communicating with the public interpreting laws and regulations related to eligibility determination. Graduation from an accredited college or university and an ABA accredited law school is required. Licensure before the highest court of any state or federal bar is required. Eligibility for licensure to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims is mandatory. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the education requirement but not for legal licensure. Accredited to represent veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in veterans' law is strongly preferred.
