THE POSITION

Do you want to help safeguard public resources and strengthen anti-fraud efforts? Apply to be a Special Investigator Trainee with the State Workers' Insurance Fund (SWIF), Financial Management Division. This role teaches you what it takes to assist in the prevention, identification, and investigation of insurance fraud and abuse in the workers’ compensation system. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports fraud prevention by providing technical assistance and participating in SWIF’s anti-fraud plan. Work involves assisting seasoned investigators, analyzing facts, and collaborating with other agencies and investigative teams. As a Special Investigator Trainee, you will learn and perform the following duties:

  • Investigative Support:
    Help identify potential fraud within the workers’ compensation system, make determinations based on precedent, facts and circumstances, and general office guidelines
  • Evidence Gathering: Collect data, interview individuals, and additional information to support ongoing investigations
  • Information Analysis: Review and interpret financial records, medical records, and other data to spot questionable or inconsistent information and identify trends
  • Stakeholder Communication: Coordinate and correspond with coworkers, staff in other offices, and external partners to request, obtain, and share information
  • Case Documentation: Maintain files, track activities, and prepare detailed reports and summaries related to investigative findings

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Scranton. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree that includes 12 credits in criminal justice or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 12 credits in criminal justice or a closely related field.

Additional Requirements:
  • You must demonstrate the ability to adhere to the values and ethics of the Department of Labor and Industry.
  • You must demonstrate the ability to work with professionalism, discretion, and good work ethic.
  • You must have solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • You must show initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
