THE POSITION

Start a meaningful career with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as an Environmental Protection Compliance Specialist. In this role, you will help ensure that facilities and operations follow environmental laws that protect clean water. You will work with staff, legal teams, and local partners to address concerns and support enforcement actions. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the Clean Water Program by developing compliance strategies, reviewing enforcement actions, and coordinating with legal and technical staff. As an Environmental Protection Compliance Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Case Strategy: Develop compliance plans that address specific enforcement situations
  • Enforcement Preparation: Assist in drafting violation notices, orders, agreements, and penalty assessments
  • Legal Coordination: Work with attorneys to prepare case documents and provide detailed case information
  • Training Support: Guide staff on preparing enforcement materials and using available enforcement tools
  • Activity Tracking: Enter escalated actions into electronic systems and update records as needed
  • Stakeholder Communication: Provide information to operators, officials, consultants, and the public on program requirements

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position requires travel for site visits
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • One year of professional experience as a Sanitarian, Air Quality Specialist, Solid Waste Specialist, or Water Quality Specialist (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training which affords the applicant the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
