The Victims’ Advocate position is a highly responsible position within the Kentucky State Police. The ideal employee will perform all duties independently, demonstrate professionalism in all situations and interactions, and maintain strict confidentiality. The employee will treat co-employees, clients and other contacts with respect at all times. This is a demanding position that requires maturity, reliability, and self-discipline. Key Responsibilities

• Provides professional support services to an assigned Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post through assistance to Troopers and Detectives when dealing with situational assessment and crisis intervention related to victims of crime and non-offending family members impacted by crime.
• Support crime victims and victims’ families at crime scenes and in the aftermath of a traumatic event.
• Act as liaison between the crime victim and officers, detectives and Commonwealth Attorney staff officers.
• Keep case officers apprised of new information.
• Review and assess police crime reports and contact crime victims by mail, phone and in person to provide them with guidance, education and information regarding the case, services available, and maneuvering within the criminal justice system.
• Review Department of Social Service (DSS) form 115 and contact victim families to assess circumstances reported and set up interviews and exams at local Child Advocate Center (CAC) as needed.
• Communicate with school system when a student is a victim or family member when there is a potential for impact upon school and educational activities.
• Assist eligible crime victims in applying for financial assistance from the state, community, or non-profit organizations.
• Provide information and resources available on domestic violence and sexual assault services and referrals for counseling, medical, legal and social service needs.
• Assist in completing proper documentation pertaining to Emergency Protection Orders and Domestic Violence Orders.
• Provide assessment data to the Program Administrator on a monthly basis.
• Document all contacts and assessment results in agency database.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of experience in the field of criminal justice, crime victims' assistance, administration, or work dealing with the public, or a related field.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree will substitute for the required experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience in one of the above fields will substitute for the required education on a year-for- year basis. Current or prior military experience will substitute for the required college on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

Incumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Occasional travel may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
