By joining the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands/Western Branch/West Section I as a Geologist II in Hopkins County you will have the opportunity to perform professional geological work for the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) in the preparation of projects, investigation of potential project areas, and review of plans, maps or reports.
The successful candidate will be required to hike in back country areas, help with sUAV flights including using the controller at times, use technology to see into old mine works through drilled holes, investigate and map problematic areas, and help to plan reclamation projects using design software.
This is a federally funded time-limited (FFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a federal grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the federal grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to an FFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to an FFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. An FFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in geology, earth system science, earth and environmental sciences, or related field.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of geological experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in geology will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Registration by the Board of Registration for Professional Geologists (KRS Chapter 322A) will substitute for the required education.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed both in an office and in a fieldwork setting.

- Perform professional geological work for the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands (AML). Assist the department, prepare geologic information, utilize and geo-reference historic mine maps and other geologic data for AML sites in Western KY.
- Professional geologic use of Geographic Information System (GIS) software and other software to prepare data for AML reclamation projects. Prepare maps to determine borehole locations and grout mixes for subsidence reclamation projects and other projects. Compile information for Geologic Columns associated with boreholes during the construction phase using a downhole camera and other tools.
- Gather complicated field data and other information used to analyze Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) conditions at AML sites. Professionally map and organize the data.
- Make professional site inspections. Gather professional quality data and observations to help oversee and report on subsurface exploration.
- Professionally conduct citizen investigations and gather quality information used by others to determine if reported problems can be linked to AML eligible mining. Provide opinions on problem causes.
- Basic use of survey equipment for marking, locating, and scanning.
- Use of downhole camera and sonar.
- Hole logging during drilling operations.
- Potential for sUAV operation and subsequent mapping.
- Good working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and/or AutoCAD for content creation and manipulation.
- Registration as Geologist-in-training (GIT) in Kentucky or ability to obtain registration as GIT leading to Professional Geologist for career progression.
