Currently the Laboratory Certification Section of the Drinking Water Branch seeks a candidate that has 3 years of laboratory experience, good communication skills, and is an analytical thinker with an attention to detail. This Environmental Scientist III with this section will allow the incumbent to work across organizational lines, with the public and with the regulated community providing technical, scientific assistance for the Wastewater and Drinking Water Laboratory Certification Programs.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following

  • Leads staff activities as for audits of the field only Certified Wastewater Laboratory Program. On-site laboratory evaluations, some requiring overnight travel, are performed to evaluate the analytical techniques, instrumentation, quality control procedures, and record keeping practices of laboratories reporting environmental monitoring results to the Division.
  • Participate in drinking water and wastewater laboratory audits as a team member. Must familiarize with all EPA approved drinking water and wastewater analytical methods.
  • Ensures all certified laboratories are in compliance with state and federal regulations. Review of applications for certification for completeness. Review of proficiency testing (PT) results; and review of technical data to ensure compliance with the SOP and the EPA approved method.
  • Maintains entry into the Tools for Environmental Management and Protection Organizations (TEMPO360) laboratory certification database and produce documents in accordance with the standard operating procedures, business rules and guidelines as defined by the Department for Environmental Protection.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the Laboratory Certification Program. Review of internal standard operating procedures (SOPS); make presentations, attend applicable workshops and training.
  • Responds to information requests from laboratories and internal stakeholders. Prepares reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to work with variety of people from different backgrounds.
  • Analytical thinker with attention to detail.

Additional position information: The position requires travel, occasional overtime, walking in rough terrain, and working with citizens of the Commonwealth.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
