In keeping with the Marian Medical Center health care philosophy, under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Phlebotomy Supervisor manages, coordinates, and participates in all activities of the phlebotomy, accession and clerical sections of the laboratory. Performs and trains and reviews all duties of Certified Phlebotomist including routine blood collection. In addition, performs blood collections on neonates and infants, and is able to perform complete computer admissions/discharges of patient information in the Hospital Information System and computer entry of client ordered specimens in the Laboratory Information System. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the inpatient setting. Supervises the activities of Phlebotomy, Specimen Receiving and Clerical staff to keep the work quality, productivity and morale of the phlebotomy team high. Instructs phlebotomy students in their clinical rotation and may also instruct the didactic portion of the phlebotomy training program. Actively participates and assists in administrative functions to include scheduling, ordering supplies, problem resolution, counseling, evaluating, interviewing, and helps ensure the efficient daily operation of the Laboratory Department in accordance with the Laboratory Customer Service Standards. Demonstrates competency in all aspects of phlebotomy and lab assistants from Certified Laboratory Assistant I through Certified Lab Assistant III. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, following written notice.

 

Job Duties:

  • Supervises the performance of routine blood collection on patients from neonates to geriatric using appropriate venipuncture or capillary technique.
  • Trains and assesses staff in the process of positive identification of all patients.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform and train staff in proper patient registration and computer entry of physician ordered specimens in the laboratory information system.
  • Follows verbal and written instructions exactly, exercises good judgment in making decisions, and works in a professional and conscientious manner under high volume and STAT conditions.
  • Performs all job duties of Lab assistant, processor, Certified Phlebotomist I to Certified Phlebotomist III.
  • Performs job duties of Certified Phlebotomist IV to include instrument operation and specimen preparation for referral to reference laboratory.
  • Supervises, manages, and coordinates all activities of phlebotomy and lab assistant staff to ensure efficient use of resources and to provide quality patient care.
  • Provides leadership to the phlebotomy, lab assistant and clerical staff to keep the quality, productivity and morale of the staff high.
  • Manages personnel including the selection, training, and counseling of staff, and performs evaluations of assigned staff.
  • Performs administrative functions for the inhouse laboratory such as maintaining employee work schedules, arranging coverage for sick calls, processing timecards, special studies, and investigation of variance reports.
  • Supports employee development by fostering constructive behavior, encouraging involvement in department operation, and being responsive to employee input.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to ensure quality patient care and efficiency.
  • Communicates effectively with the laboratory CLS supervisors and the department director.
  • Works hand in hand with the outreach phlebotomy manager on scheduling, training and building a cohesive phlebotomy and processing department team.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and promotes high patient satisfaction.
  • Ensures that operation of section is in compliance with all State and Federal regulations and Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Tracks, monitors and reports errors, patient call backs/recollects for processing and phlebotomy staff.
  • Assists in meeting department budget targets.
  • Supports Workers' Compensation reduction programs.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of customer satisfaction.
  • Conducts employee performance evaluations on a timely basis.
  • Contributes to process improvement activities demonstrating appropriate skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to mentor others in department to meet department goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to problem solve and achieve effective solutions.
  • Actively supports the organization's mission, philosophy and strategic plan.
  • Demonstrates good time management and priority setting.
  • Complies with safety, infection control, Dignity core values, ADIET and other organizational policies.
  • Complies with organization policy on legibility.

Job Requirements

Required

  • A minimum of 5 years experience as a phlebotomist in an acute care or high volume outpatient laboratory setting.
  • 3 year supervisory experience that includes employee training, coaching, counseling, and performance evaluation.
  • Must possess a current California Phlebotomy Certification as CPTI or CPTII.
