Job Description - About the Role:
Ever wonder how complex buildings - like high-tech data centers, cutting-edge labs, or smart skyscrapers - actually come to life? They don’t just get built; they get pushed to their limits, tested, and optimized. That’s where Commissioning (Cx) comes in: the ultimate quality assurance and systems engineering challenge.
At CxTeam, you’ll get a macro-level view of how large mechanical and automation systems integrate and communicate to each other on active, major construction projects across the U.S. Working out of our Boston office, you will collaborate directly with a certified Commissioning Authority to learn and apply the commissioning process, ensuring high-performance buildings operate exactly as designed.
The Experience You’ll Gain:
· Design & Blueprint Analysis: Participate in blueprint design reviews and equipment submittal reviews to catch engineering flaws before ground is broken.
· Test Development: Develop pre-functional checklists and functional test forms that will be used to stress-test building systems.
· Data & Controls Engineering: Review Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) reports, dive into automation controls Performance Verification Testing (PVT) reports, and analyze endurance trend results to ensure everything is tuned perfectly.
· Technical Reporting: Author high-level Commissioning Plans and draft Final Cx Reports that grant clients the green light to turnover high-performing, sustainable buildings.
· Field Experience: If project schedules align, you’ll head out of the office for a site visit to see the equipment, systems, and your testing protocols deployed live in the field.
Requirements & Qualifications:
· Education: Actively enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related discipline.
· Age: Must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the internship.
· Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note: CxTeam does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
· Technical Literacy: Ability and experience reading and interpreting basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) schematic blueprints.
· Communication Skills: Strong technical writing skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel to translate data into clear, actionable logic.
· Mindset: Analytical mindset, high attention to detail (the type to notice the small error in a complex schematic), and an intrinsic motivation to be a problem solver while knowing when to ask for guidance.
· Passion: Curious about building & energy systems, automation, HVAC controls, and creating a sustainable future.
Preferred / Desirable Experience:
· Prior internship / co-op experience on a commercial construction site or within an engineering design office.
· Fundamental academic coursework or project experience relating to HVAC systems, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, building envelope systems, or Building Automation Systems (BAS).
· Familiarity with industry software such as Procore, AutoCAD, Revit/BIM 360/Autodesk, Bluebeam, CxAlloy, or FacilityGrid.
· Campus leadership involvement demonstrating teamwork skills.
Logistics & Logistics Disclaimers:
· Travel: Position is primarily office-based with possibility of occasional, local supervised site visits as schedules permit.
· Housing: Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.
· Equipment: CxTeam provides all necessary technology (including corporate laptops and engineering software access) and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for field visits.
Salary : $22 - $28
