Position Summary
The Automation Technician II is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial automation and control systems. This position performs work with a moderate level of independence and technical skill and supports the commissioning and maintenance of instrumentation, PLC systems, control panels, and related electrical components. The Automation Technician II works in industrial and oil and gas environments and assists in ensuring systems operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with company standards and project specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial automation and control systems.
- Install and terminate control wiring for PLC panels, instrumentation, and field devices.
- Install and maintain instrumentation including pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters.
- Perform calibration and functional testing of instrumentation and control devices.
- Assist with commissioning of PLC-based control systems and automation equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical and automation system issues using appropriate diagnostic tools and testing equipment.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, loop diagrams, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
- Install conduit, cable trays, and field wiring for automation and control systems.
- Work with PLC hardware and assist with minor programming adjustments under supervision when required.
- Maintain documentation related to equipment installation, calibration, and troubleshooting activities.
- Coordinate work activities with electricians, technicians, supervisors, and other trades.
- Provide guidance and assistance to Automation Technician I personnel when needed.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 2–5 years of experience working with industrial automation, instrumentation, or electrical systems.
- Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation and control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, loop diagrams, and control schematics.
- Familiarity with ROC800 & Allen Bradley PLC systems and industrial automation equipment.
- Experience using electrical testing equipment such as multimeters and loop calibrators.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical certification or associate degree in electrical technology, instrumentation, automation, or a related field.
- Experience with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley, ROC800, or similar systems.
- Experience working in industrial, manufacturing, or oil and gas environments.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- H2S Awareness certification.
- First Aid / CPR certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, kneel, and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to perform overhead work and operate hand and power tools.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, wind, and dust.
Work Environment
This position may require work in industrial facilities, construction sites, and oil and gas field environments. Employees may be exposed to loud noise, heavy equipment, energized electrical systems, elevated work areas, and varying environmental conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.
- Participate in job safety meetings, hazard assessments, and required safety training.
- Follow proper Lockout/Tagout procedures when working on electrical or automation equipment.
- Identify and report hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Wear required PPE including flame-resistant clothing and other protective equipment as required.
