Job Summary
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides occupational therapy services under the direction and supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT). The COTA assists in implementing individualized treatment plans designed to help infants, children, and adolescents improve their ability to participate in age-appropriate daily activities, develop fine motor, sensory processing, cognitive, and self-care skills, and achieve their highest level of functional independence. The COTA works collaboratively with families, caregivers, and an interdisciplinary team to provide compassionate, evidence-based, family-centered pediatric therapy services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement occupational therapy treatment plans established by the supervising Occupational Therapist.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to improve pediatric patients' fine motor skills, sensory processing, visual-motor integration, coordination, strength, self-care abilities, and functional independence.
  • Utilize play-based, developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities to engage children and promote skill development.
  • Instruct parents and caregivers in therapeutic exercises, home programs, adaptive techniques, and the safe use of adaptive equipment to reinforce therapy goals.
  • Observe, document, and report patient progress, responses to treatment, and changes in condition to the supervising Occupational Therapist.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory, payer, and organizational requirements.
  • Collaborate with physicians, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, educators, family members, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Assist with patient evaluations by gathering information and performing delegated assessment activities.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, patient safety, HIPAA, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in care conferences, team meetings, continuing education activities, and quality improvement initiatives as required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Current, unrestricted Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Current Virginia Occupational Therapy Assistant license in good standing.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Pediatric experience preferred, but new graduates with a passion for pediatric therapy are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining appropriate supervision by a licensed Occupational Therapist.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, transfer, position, and assist pediatric patients as needed (up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation).
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, squatting, sitting on the floor, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to demonstrate therapeutic activities, exercises, and play-based interventions appropriate for pediatric patients.

Work Environment

  • Provide occupational therapy services in a pediatric clinic.
  • Work closely with infants, children, adolescents, and their families in a supportive, engaging, and family-centered environment.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and child-friendly therapy environment.

License/Certification Requirements

  • Current Virginia Occupational Therapy Assistant License (required).
  • NBCOT Certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) (required).
  • Current CPR certification.

Compensation & BenefitsCompensation
