We are seeking a Controller of Financial Operations & Reimbursement to lead our financial operations, reimbursement performance, and revenue cycle strategy. This senior leader will strengthen financial stability, improve operational accountability, and ensure compliance across a complex payer landscape.
About the Job
The Controller of Financial Operations & Reimbursement is the organization’s senior accounting and reimbursement leader. This role blends traditional controller responsibilities with operational oversight of revenue cycle management, reimbursement workflows, billing readiness, accounts payable, cost reporting, and financial planning.
The Controller partners closely with executive leadership—including the President, COO, clinical leadership, quality assurance, utilization, billing, and operations—to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, efficient reimbursement processes, and data-driven operational decision-making.
Day to Day Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Accounting Operations
- General Ledger Oversight — Manage the chart of accounts, journal entries, reconciliations, and month‑end/year‑end close.
- Financial Reporting — Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, KPI dashboards, forecasting, and operational reports.
- Internal Controls — Maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and audit‑ready documentation.
- Cash Management — Oversee cash flow, treasury functions, and financial integrity.
- Audit & Regulatory Support — Lead audit preparation, tax filings, and regulatory financial reporting.
- Payroll & AP/AR Oversight — Ensure accurate payroll processing, vendor payments, and receivables management.
Revenue Cycle & Reimbursement Operations
- Provide leadership oversight of billing, accounts receivable, collections, payment posting, claims management, denial management, and unbilled claims monitoring.
- Monitor reimbursement performance across Medicare, Medicaid/MassHealth, managed care, and commercial payers.
- Develop and track key revenue cycle metrics, including:
- Days Sales Outstanding (DSO)
- Collection rates
- Denial trends
- Cash collections
- Outstanding unsigned orders
- Unbilled visits
- Identify operational and financial barriers impacting reimbursement and cash flow.
- Collaborate with operations, clinical, quality, utilization, and intake teams to improve reimbursement workflows and accountability.
Documentation Compliance & Billing Readiness
- Oversee financial and operational processes that ensure billing readiness and reimbursement compliance.
- Partner with clinical leadership, quality assurance, and intake to ensure:
- Timely physician orders
- Completed certifications/recertifications
- Documentation required for billing is completed promptly
- Operational workflows support efficient reimbursement
- Monitor aging of unsigned orders, incomplete documentation, and other reimbursement barriers.
- Develop reporting and accountability structures to improve billing timeliness and collections.
- Serve as a financial and operational resource for reimbursement‑related workflow improvements.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Annual Budget Leadership — Lead the annual budgeting process.
- Develop financial and operational models related to census growth, staffing utilization, reimbursement trends, productivity, and margin improvement.
- Conduct variance analysis and provide actionable recommendations to leadership.
- Support strategic financial planning and operational decision‑making.
- Perform profitability analysis by region, discipline, payer, or program.
Medicare & Medicaid Cost Reporting
- Prepare or oversee preparation of Medicare and Medicaid/MassHealth cost reports.
- Coordinate supporting schedules and documentation for audits and regulatory submissions.
- Monitor reimbursement regulation changes and advise leadership on financial impacts.
- Identify opportunities for reimbursement optimization while maintaining compliance.
Leadership & Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Supervise and mentor finance, billing, and reimbursement staff.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with executive leadership, operations, clinical management, payroll, and quality assurance.
- Participate in organizational planning and operational improvement initiatives.
- Support the development of operational reporting structures and performance accountability systems.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5–10 years of progressive healthcare finance or accounting leadership experience
- Strong understanding of Medicare and Medicaid/MassHealth reimbursement
- Experience in home health, hospice, behavioral health, or post‑acute care
- Expertise in healthcare revenue cycle operations, billing, collections, and cost reporting
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
- Knowledge of accrual-based accounting
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
- Advanced Excel and financial reporting proficiency
- Supervisory experience
Preferred
- CPA, MBA, or MHA
- Experience with home care billing, EVV systems, or MassHealth programs
- Familiarity with QuickBooks Desktop, Sage Intacct, or healthcare EMR/billing systems
- Strong operational mindset with ability to connect clinical workflows to financial performance
