Who we are looking for:
This position is responsible for driving the vision, strategy and execution of engineering initiatives that support and advance our business goals. The role plays a key part in defining the technical direction of the firm while cultivating a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional leaders and project teams to establish and reinforce engineering best practices, elevate team performance, and ensure successful delivery of high-quality, technically sound work. While the primary focus will be on geotechnical engineering, the position also includes oversight and strategic guidance for engineering services within our construction materials testing and environmental operations.
What you’ll be doing:
- Develop and implement engineering strategies, policies and procedures that align with overall company objectives.
- Serves as technical expert by providing advice, counsel and peer review to ensure the technical appropriateness and accuracy.
- Leads the development, refinement and implementation of company-wide proposal and report formats, standards, procedures and best practices.
- Develops and implements training/educational programs required by company personnel to keep the overall company at the “leading edge” of technology and in compliance with industry standards and quality.
- Formulates, recommends and implements policies and procedures to improve operations.
- Maintains and keeps abreast of new technology, standards and codes.
- Meets with branch operations staff and corporate leadership to coordinate activities and initiatives, and provide oversight of staff mentoring and professional growth to foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Work with branch and corporate staff to lead, mentor and inspire a diverse team of engineers and related disciplines, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and objectives. Serve as a motivational force for engineering staff.
- Ensure high standards of quality and professional practice across all engineering deliverables and reports.
- Coordinates with executive leadership to define and execute the firm’s strategy, resource planning and long-term growth initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
What you need to have:
- Master’s Degree or higher in related engineering field required.
- 15 years of related engineering experience required.
- E. licensure required in VA, DC, MD, NC, and SC or the ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of employment.
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams to achieve goals.
- Excellent attention to details.
- Must be willing to participate in and pass F&R’s pre-employment screening including a background. investigation, drug screening and driving record.
- This position operates primarily in a professional office environment with frequent interaction and collaboration across corporate, branch, and field operations.
- The role requires periodic travel to project sites, laboratories, and client offices to provide technical oversight, leadership, and quality assurance.
- Field visits may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, active construction sites, uneven terrain, loud noise, and other typical job-site hazards.
- Standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and presentation tools are routinely used.
- The position typically follows standard business hours but may occasionally require evening or weekend availability to meet project, client, or company needs.
- The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk, and hear, and may occasionally walk through field environments, climb stairs or embankments, and lift or move up to 25 pounds.
- The position requires the ability to drive to and from work sites and must have a valid driver’s license with good-standing driving record.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when visiting job sites or laboratories.
- Ability to travel periodically to other offices with some overnight stays required.
