What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance IV position at Comal County?
Maintain the Comal County Jail and Sheriff’s Office in high standards and oversee maintenance of major mechanical and electrical systems (i.e., routinely will work with electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and emergency generators).
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include the following:
- Routinely inspects Sheriff’s Office area and Jail facilities mechanisms and plan for preventative maintenance.
- Oversees maintenance contractors and verifies all finished work.
- Repairs minor electrical, plumbing, and mechanical problems.
- Inspects air-conditioning equipment on a regular basis to ensure it is maintained in proper working condition.
- Performs routine maintenance on generators at several Comal County radio tower sites on a weekly basis.
- Moves or assists in moving office equipment, furniture, supplies or records.
- Performs custodial tasks as needed.
- Inspects facilities and grounds for safety and security; identifies and reports hazardous conditions and facility maintenance needs to superintendent; helps maintain grounds.
- Subject to rotational on-call duty as needed per Departmental Policy.
- Performs other related tasks and assists in other county buildings as directed..
- Attendance is an essential function of the job.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Must possess working knowledge of heating, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, emergency generators, and custodial procedures and practices. One (1) to two (2) years of maintenance operations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Other specialized job requirements include a valid Texas driver’s license in order to operate county vehicles.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

This position has been identified with possible risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and/or other various hazards that require immunization against such exposure. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to highly precarious places. The job is located inside the secured areas of the Jail, with convicted felons in close contact. The employee works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
