What's this Job All About?

In this role you will have the opportunity to investigate cases of juvenile delinquency or dependency and adult applicants for probation; supervise and counsel juveniles and adults on probation; and to prepare reports and recommendations for court.

In addition, this assignment includes facilitating and coordinating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based rehabilitative group programming in a justice-involved setting, including: Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), and the Batterers’ Treatment Program . You will deliver and support structured probation programs guided by research-supported, evidence-based practices designed to improve participant outcomes, promote accountability, and enhance community safety.

Selection Procedure (subject to change)

The following is a tentative schedule of events that will occur as part of the selection process:
  • Applications will be accepted until Thursday, May 21 , 2026.
  • BSCC Probation Officer Examination will tentatively be on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
  • Oral Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of June 15, 2026 (subject to change).
  • Background Investigation and Psychological Exam

Supervision & Examples of Duties

Deputy Probation Officer I

Receives direction from the Chief Probation Officer and direct supervision from the supervising Probation Officers.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Receives direction from the Chief Probation Officer and supervision from the supervising Probation Officers.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :
Deputy Probation Officer I
Experience:
Some experience in the field of probation or law enforcement is desirable.

Training :
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in law enforcement, criminal justice or closely related field.

License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver’s license.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a certificate of completion of course prescribed by commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) pursuant to Section 832 of the California Penal Code.

Completion of or the ability to complete the STC Probation Officer CORE Course and the possession of, or the ability to obtain California Penal Code 832 Certification.

Learn to facilitate Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), Batterers’ Treatment Program (BTP)and other Cognitive Behavioral Therapy programs.

Obtain MRT and BTP certification within a timeframe established by the department, as required by assignment.
Deputy Probation Officer II - In addition to the Qualifications for a Deputy Probation Officer I:
Experience:
One year of experience equivalent to a Deputy Probation Officer I in the County of Colusa.

Training :
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in law enforcement, criminal justice or closely related field.

License or Certificate:
Completion of the STC Probation Officer CORE Course and the possession of California Penal Code 832 Certification.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, MRT and BTP certification as required by assignment.

Supplemental Information

Salary Information:
Deputy Probation Officer I: $4,578 - $7,518 Based on a 40-hour week.
Deputy Probation Officer II: $5,057 - $8,301 Based on a 40-hour week.
